“Warm friendly and helpful concierge”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

We loved our stay at the Kyoto Brighton hotel. We weren't certain about travelling to Kyoto without knowing much Japanese, but the wonderful staff at the Brighton made our visit a pleasure. The room was terrific as were the amenities.

We had breakfast in the hotel twice, and drinks in the lobby. The staff helped us find wonderful places to dine outside the hotel and provided great directions to all the places we wanted to visit. I would highly recommend this hotel to visiting westerners.

This is not everyone's choice for location (in what is a really big city) but the hotel is very nice. Everything worked very well during my stay, from wi-fi to room service. I thought the Western breakfast was among the best I have had in Japanese hotels - lots of choice and many delicate and well-presented things. The outside swimming pool cannot of course be used during the many cold months.

I am not normally a fan of big hotels like this, they can be impersonal and nothingy, but we all loved this place. Not altogether that many western guests, and is something of a wedding venue for the local community which can make for great people watching! The Room was brilliant, comfortable, quiet and with lots of modcons to make our stay comfortable, and as you might expect from this part of the world, nothing was too much trouble.... Just around the corner from the Imperial Palace - highly recommended.

Room Tip: Don't forget a visit to the roof terrace pool! :)

By any standards this is an outstanding, affordable hotel. The rooms are huge and spotlessly clean, the decor modern and the service is first class. The key staff are friendly, all speak perfect English and nothing is too much trouble. Only a couple of small negatives: Restaurant prices are high but no need to eat there, also many reviewers comment about the location - and yes it is north of the city centre (but so are some of the attractions e.g. Golden Pavillion). But once you are out, you are out for the day if you plan to see the city. The hotel suggested we use the all day bus pass (500 Yen) which we did and it took us to all the major sites. Our room had one huge double bed and two singles for the kids (13 & 11) and there was still loads of space. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it !

Room Tip: All rooms are good

No hotel is going to suit everyone's desires. This hotel is very comfortable and makes travelling easy. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. Everything is wonderful and the shuttle bus into the middle of Kyoto is a wonderful service, and from there you can walk to most places - the Chion temple, the Gion district etc. The Imperial palace and gardens are a few minutes walk from the Hotel. The rooms are huge by any standards, modern and clean.I tried both the Japanese restaurant and the Tappenyaki and the food at both were superb, but very expensive and I would have preferred the breakfast buffet to be less 'westernised'. If you ask the Concierge for restaurant suggestions she/he is going to give you very expensive options and these are not necessarily the most interesting or best places. This is definitely a lovely comfortable hotel that would suit the less adventurous spirit. If you are young or young at heart you might find it all a bit too safe and comfortable. I personally prefer a hotel that doesn't cater/pander too much to western needs as it can feel like you haven't left home. It's hard to fault this hotel but just be aware it may not be to your taste if you like a little more edge to your travel experience. I will definitely seek out a Ryokan next time I visit Kyoto.

This by far was our favourite place to stay in Japan. The hotel is so nice. From the time you pull up the service is outstanding. Nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is so beautiful and our rooms were huge. We ordered room service and the food was delivered on time and presented beautifully very yummy. The bathroom was divine want to take it home. We woke up to our first experience with snow played outside then came into a lovely warm buffet breakfast. Thank you Hotel Brighton for our wonderful stay...

A new favorite for our family. This hotel has a modest exterior façade, but inside is very up to date and upscale, with a six story interior lobby / atrium, glass elevators, and a full panoply of amenities. Nice bathrobes, soaking tub, Japanese shower, Toto Washelet toilet, toothbrushes, WiFi, you name it.

The staff here have to be the most courteous and helpful of any hotel I’ve ever stayed in anywhere in the world. They must be specially selected for their personalities. I particularly found several of the concierge staff to be extremely helpful. For instance, I gave them a style of dinner I wanted, and an approximate price range, and in moments, they came up with several suggestions, pulled out detailed maps to give me, which precisely located the restaurant I selected, called ahead and made a reservation., and came outside to chat with the taxi driver, to make sure there were no errors in translation. No charge, of course, and no tipping allowed. Just smiling, helpful assistance, rendered in perfect English. And a next day follow-up when they saw me walking through the lobby … a quick question about how did we like the dinner? They’ll look up opening and closing times of museums for you, explain where to find an English-speaking ATM, etc. At one point, I made a call to the front desk about the possibility of getting some laundry done … someone was at our door in under three minutes and the laundry was back in perfect condition the next afternoon.

Solid breakfast buffet here, but I can’t comment on any of the other dining times or restaurants on-site, as we ate our other meals out on the town. When asked for advice about dining out, the concierge staff never made noises about the hotel’s restaurants being superior, etc. That told me that they were looking out for me, and not just for the hotel. Oh, and there is a desert bar in the lobby with rows of delectable deserts on display. Oh, my.

The location is the only drawback … it’s a bit out of the way to most of Kyoto’s hot attractions. But the good news is that Kyoto’s not that large, so you can get to anywhere in Kyoto by taxi in fifteen minutes, and for perhaps twelve hundred yen. Or it’s a short walk to the subway. I think they also rent bicycles here, but I found the taxis so easy and inexpensive that I didn’t even inquire.

So, overall, if you want service with unfailing charm and smiles, this is the place for you. And do make full use of the concierge staff. They’re wonderful.
