Nice hotel and a great location. The rooms were small, of course, but still nice and fresh. The location is great, being close to the city centre and Gion and more. The hotel bar feels like walking into an old movie with its fancy atmosphere and serious looking and proper bartenders.

Dear Johannes,

Thank you for your generous comments concerning your stay at our hotel. We are thankful that you appreciated our location and comfort of your room.

If you should decide to return to Kyoto may we suggest that you explore Teramachi dori with it’s great shops and restaurants and it will lead you directly to the Imperial Palace which is only a short walk away. You may also want to try our Kotoran spa and enjoy one of it’s relaxing treatments.

Again we thank you for taking the time to share your comments and we hope to get to serve you again in the near future.

We spent 2 nights here during the Gion Festival and Parade. The hotel is located on the parade route and within a 20-30 min walk to the events leading up to the parade. And that is where the good review ends.

This hotel is rated 4-stars so I expected above-average facilities as well as good service. What little we used of services was A+. The facility was a 2-star at best. And yes, I put aside my western expectations and still, at least our room was barely pushing 2 stars... especially based upon pictures and previous reviews. Our room was a decent size, the beds were fine. The bathroom was where it all fell apart. It was tiny which was fine. But it never shook the odor of mold and urine. There were little mold spots on the tile in the shower area although I don't think that was causing the smell. The shower curtain on the tub didn't appear dirty but it was the only thing I could think of that could generate a smell. The western automatic toilet appeared clean but again, where was the urine smell coming from? I even went down the block to a Family Mart and bought some cleaning supplies and that still didn't do the trick. Strange.

Our room was on the damp side in general but that is hard to avoid in hot, humid weather without an elaborate HVAC system.

Based upon pictures both on the hotel's website and by other reviewers, there appear to be renovated or at least updated rooms there. We didn't score one (we had room 953). But, in all fairness, the hotel was not our destination, it was simply a place to sleep while in Kyoto for the festival and to see the sights.

Knowing what I know now, I would suggest booking a room at a local ryokan to enjoy the whole Kyoto experience.

Dear cgiessler,

Thank you for your comments about your stay at our hotel.

We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed our location and neighborhood. We apologize for the fact that you seem to have gotten a room with a less than perfect bathroom. I wish that we would have been made aware of this, for we could have found you something better. We do apologize for the inconvenience you endured.

You may have noticed that we are located in a very exciting area with easy access to all means of transportation, great shopping and exciting places like Nishiki market. Perhaps when you return to Kyoto you can try our classic Lounge Haven and relax in our leather sofas while you sip one of our famous cocktails.

We thank you again for your comments and hope to get the chance to serve you again in the future.

First of all, the hotel is at a top location. The main restaurant and shopping streets are around the corner, and the Gion quarters, etc, are within a 15min walk. The hotel serves really good breakfast with a variety of japanese and european dishes. We in particular liked the miso soup with different things to add. The personal are very polite and helpful (nothing else to expect in Japan). Fast laundry, in case you underestimated the heat in June and brought to few shirts. The hotel is nothing fancy though, and the double beds are on the small side (although my guess is that it is standard). In addition, good air condition and quite rooms. Finally, top notch high pressured "rear-showers" in the toilet.

Firstly this hotel has a really good location. On one of the main shopping streets, with subway, arcades and Pontocho all within 200m. Also, 205 bus stop outside the hotel goes straight to Kinkaku-ji temple and is the best way of getting there.

A few tips on the hotel. We booked a double and twin room. Avoid the doubles as they are tiny. Twin rooms are nearly twice the size, with two comfy chairs, cupboard is double the size and there is a place to put your suitcase.

Breakfast is very expensive, but just round the corner (turn left out of the hotel, down to the lights and left again) is a great boulangerie and cafe that serves excellent breakfasts and is great value. 3 to 4 people fed for the same price as 1 at the hotel. Very busy at times but worth waiting for a table. See photo.

Our first time in Japan, and the beginning of a long journey/ The hotel was in an ideal location, and we had the best time - the rooms were spacious and clean, the staff very helpful, and the hotel was excellent. From that location it was easy to find things to see and do by bus, underground or just walking. Staff directions had us seeing the best of the sights . We arrived in Kyoto after flying in to Nagoya - so easy to do this - and we caught a bullet train to Yokohama to catch our cruise ship -equally simple. Seeing Mt Fuji from the train was a great surprise. Our first trip to Japan will not be the last, and we will stay once again at this hotel.

This was my sixth trip to Japan. My husband and adult son shared a twin room, and I had an adjoining room to myself because as a rule Japan hotel rooms can be rather compact. We stayed three nights in early June after a week in frenetic Tokyo. We had a very enjoyable stay at this same hotel six years ago, and were happy to discover that its high standards were still being upheld. The staff was very professional and cordial. The rooms were very clean and serene. The buffet breakfast in the lovely restaurant was especially delightful. We much preferred this downtown location to staying in the busier Kyoto Station area. This hotel is adjacent to a major subway station with an underground shopping mall. It is a short walk to the Teramachi shopping area and Nishiki food market. We chose to take taxis to other sites around the city because fares in Kyoto are very reasonable. We will definitely stay at this hotel the next time, and maybe I'll get a relaxing shiatsu massage in my room!

Kyoto royal hotel is in the heart of Kyoto,
Shiyakusho-mae metro station is 1 minute away by walk.
In front of the hotel, there are bus stops, you can visit almost all the temples in Kyoto with these buses. So i think the location is perfect.
Another very good thing is the breakfast. At the hotels in Osaka and Tokyo, the breakfast are not good, i mean there's almost nothing to eat. But here at Kyoto Royal Hotel , you can find cornflakes, tomatos, cheese, jams :)
The rooms are clean and big enough for 3 person (one is 5 years old child).
Another good think is the front desk people. They give us bus tickets, maps about the hotel area, maps of the temples.
They are very very helpfull.

Overall, i strongly recommend this hotel :)
Hope to see Kyoto and stay again at Kyoto Royal Hotel and Spa.
