Worst hotel I’ve stayed at to date

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
Actual trash experience at a trash hotel. Outdated, room was moldy, terrible customer service. They charge you for everything!! It kind of ruined my whole stay in Japan. What a nightmare glad I made it out of there, don’t waste your money you will hate it

There are so many other options in Kyoto. Book anywhere else.

The staff are aggressively rigid and expect you to follow a million protocols. This was not my experience in other hotels in Japan. It was awful coming here from Tokyo and Osaka where the hotels had been amazing.

The staff at the Rihga were inflexible and patronizing at all times. The executive floor didn't have anything to offer. It doesn't have a lounge (which are common on exceutive floors), or any perks for that matter - so is just a way to scam more money out of people for absolutely nothing. The rooms weren't even nicer than lower floors, they were old and showing a lot of wear. The buffet restaurant was crowded and dirty, with stains all over the chairs.

This was the only poor hotel experience on an entire month long trip to Japan. Please take this advice and stay away from the Rihga, unless you like being bossed around, treated like a naughty child and scammed for services they do not provide.

The only redeeming features were the helpful concierge and quality cleaning staff.

While in Kyoto we stayed at the Righa Royal and was pleasantly impressed how nice they greeted us. We got nice views watching the Shinkansen each morning and night. Upon arrival, we enjoyed picking from one of the multiple restaurants available onsite. Pleasant experience.

Room tip: Very close to Kyoto Station, convenience stores (Lawsons and Family Mart), and multiple restaurants.

This hotel is in a fantastic location, close to Kyoto train station and several shopping malls. My room was quite small, so it was hard to open suitcases. The staff was nice and friendly. The breakfast was good, with both Japanese and western style dishes.

Let me start with saying that there’s nothing Royal about Rihga. We were welcomed by the uncourteous staff at the hotel reception who asked us to carry our bags ourselves to the room. Rooms are very cramped. House keeping is only done till 12 PM after which you will have to make a special request which is also entertained till 2 PM. Post 2 PM room will not be cleaned. Duvet slides inside the cover and you keep fixing that all night. Breakfast timing is 10 AM but they put a close sign after 9.30 AM and nothing is refreshed after that. They shut the counters and pick up the food at exact 10 AM including the coffee machines. All in all it feels like an army base where you are always on your toes. It felt like the hotel did a favour by letting us stay in their property. This hotel is the only bad experience in my entire 10 day japan tour. The only good thing is the proximity to kyoto station however there are other hotel options nearby.
