Nice to stay in a Japanese-style hostel with own room and shared facilities in a real Japanese neighbourhood rather than in tourist central but the place really could do with a bit of a makeover. A coat of paint, some nice new lights, a simple but not tacky table - all these things would cost next to nothing but really lift this place. The garden really was a delight though. And it was peaceful. Shared facilities were very basic but adequate if you have low expectations. Bedding and tatami were certainly very clean, thankfully.

It's been a pleasant stay at the ryokan Yamazaki. The inner garden is beautiful. Some rooms are located a bit further from the road and in the end, it's a good choice for those who prefer a calm place. Even better, a river is sliding just next to the ryokan. The staff is helpful, the japanese traditional breakfast is a must.

We really enjoyed our say at Ryokan Yamazaki, with it's nice garden, good accommodation and friendly staff, and even more fantastic food. It was really nice to stay a bit off the city centre, the nature is great up there.

We booked the room without realising how for from Kyoto it was. We trekked out to the property and we’re amazing at the area and how gorgeous it is. The actual property is in immaculate condition and the rooms were very well kept. Quite cold at night but that was expected as we are used to the heat a lot more. The shared common area was lovely and there was a 711 down the road which was nice. Super friendly.

We have decided to book this ryokan after reading the good reviews on tripadvisor but it had somewhat disappointed us. We were there for 2 nights during April and it was still quite cold. Although there is a radiator and air conditioning in the room, the floor is not heated. And as the mattresses are placed on the floor, it was quite uncomfortable throughout the night. I think there wasn't any heater in the common areas as well. There was a family who hogged the bathroom the entire night while we were there on the first day and the kids were running around. The sound proofing is bad. There wasn't anyone available to ask for help in the ryokan unless we walked to the main registration area which is a separate house in about a 5-10 mins walk. In all, we felt that it is more like a hostel in a ryokan form, and your experience really depends on the other guests. When we do ask for help, the staffs were helpful and friendly though!
