Ryokan with traditional japanese atmosphere

Review of Rakucho Ryokan
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Apr 2019via mobile
The host was very helpful and gave us recommendation with great restaurants in nearby. We slept verry well as the futons were comfortable. This ryokan is really nice place with traditional japanese atmosphere. The location of the ryokan is out of the city center. Not sure if this is a disadvantage as it can be taken as a plus - no noise. With bus(which goes often) you can reach the city center in approx. 20min. Toilets were usually very clean, unless somebody didnt hit the toilet bowl.

We stayed here for four days as our base for seeing Kyoto. It's in a normal residential neighborhood, just far enough away from the tourist zone but with easy access to everything by bus. The layout and accommodations in the ryokan were wonderful, the right balance of traditional atmosphere and modern conveniences. The room was a good size, with tatami floor, a small table, futon bedding that was very comfortable, and a view right into a gorgeous Japanese garden out our window!

Our best memory, however, was our host, Katsunori Urade; Katsu-san. He was right there every time we arrived or left, helping us with our questions, making suggestions, explaining the transportation options. His English is exceptional. We felt very well cared for. He gave us the confidence to use the bus system. The the closest stop is just 100 yards away, and we went all over the city by bus, with some subway time as well. And if Katsu-san recommends a restaurant, you should go!

We are so pleased that we chose this for our Kyoto stay. Great host, great facilities (American bathrooms were never this good!), great sleep on our futons!

we've stayed several night here - and it was good idea even if the place is outside of main attractions; it has decent access with city transportation nearby, it is quiet, very well organized (incl washing machine). Also the host is very supportive.
The only issue for us were breakfasts - no reasonable place nearby.

This is a traditional style Japanese inn. Our host was extremely polite and helpful, and spoke English well. Our room is large enough, and has plenty of cupboard space, a large round table, two fold out futon beds with ample linen, and tea making facilities.

Note that the Ryokan does feature 'shared bathrooms' but this really isn't to your detriment, as I counted at least 3 showers and 3 toilets, both of which are modern and clean. I never waited to use either.

Other shared facilities included a washer and dryer, both coin operated. There is a common laptop in the lobby with internet access, and there are dozens of maps, guides and travel books for you to borrow.

The location is excellent, just a 10 minute walk to Kitaoji station, over the bridge, which will get you to Kyoto station in around 10 minutes. There are bus routes nearby and the Ryokan can sell you a bus pass.

The atmosphere of the Ryokan is superb, guests all respected the noise restrictions, but I'd certainly avoid bringing young children or anybody prone to drunken stupor.

We had a great time at this Ryokan, and consider it the best accommodation we've had in all of Japan.

Despite the thin walls, most guests seem to respect the silence of the place.
Quite well located, although not in the most active part of Kyoto.
Very clean, big room (Japanese-Style Economy Twin Room with Shared Bathroom).
Better futons than in other places.
Definitely recommended.

A great traditional ryokan in Kyoto. As mentioned in other reviews, this place is out of the city center but is very well connected. Just hop on the bus and you'll be in most places of interest in max 30 minutes. The place itself is very nice and simple. Everything is very clean and therefore sharing a shower is not a problem at all. The traditional style rooms are simple but spacious. The only downside is that you can hear every (yes, the snorer next door too!) single thing happening in the house. Pack your earplugs and be respectful to others!

Room tip: Try to stay away from the ground floor (showers, washing machine, drier)
