Owner description: One of Kyoto's most famous attractions, this temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.

“A Must-See”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

When I visited Kyoto briefly at the end of a business trip a few years back, everyone told me that this attraction was not to be missed. They were right. And when I returned during Cherry Blossom season this year, it was every bit as beautiful as I had remembered it. The tranquility of the lake, the simplicity of the two story structure, the beauty of the wooded surroundings, and the shimmering gold - all add up to a memorable experience. Very romantic for couples in Cherry Blossom season, and I imagine the same would be true in the autumn.

“Amazingly unique sight”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

You see a gold temple! what's not to love? I've visited quite a few shrines/temples in Japan and this one takes the cake for being the most unique. It's a must see in Kyoto/Japan if you want to visit temples.

“Must Visit Temple!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

This is my favourite Temple in Kyoto! It's breathtaking! Kinkaku-ji, along with Fushimi Inari Shrine are two of my favourite places in Kyoto. So if you don't have enough time, these two are a must!

“Over-rated & crowded”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

Apart from the view of the the Golden Pavilion across the water, there is little of interest in the complex. The gardens are mediocre by comparison with, say, Ginkakuji or the Heian Shrine &, as the complex is a regular tour bus stop, you need to arrive very early to avoid the worst of the crush. There are many more attractive, less-crowded Temples & Shrines in Kyoto.

“A bit disappointing”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

It's a beautiful place with great Japanese gardens to visit. However, called the golden pavilion I expected something more spectacular. I wouldn't say not go, but I do think there are better places in Kyoto to go to.
