“Great place for dinner and people watching.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

Located by the canal. Full of restaurants and different kind of cuisine. People watching is great mixing locals and tourists. Nothing fancy, restaurants in general are small. The alley is not too long, if stroll slowly, will finish it in 20 minutes. While this place attracted mostly tourists, the price is steep. Great to walk around here at night to see the lights of signs.

“Nice place to eat and take pictures”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

Nice place to eat and take pictures at night. Some geishas and maikos wander the place. Hard to get them to take a picture.
Close to here there is a river, also filled with siding restaurants and cafés.

“Good place to chill for the evening.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

This is one place to check out in Kyoto, located alongside the canal, this street is buzzling with restaurants. The stretch of alley is pretty long, and prices a little steep here. Take a stroll along gion at night to help digest your meal.

“A nice alley”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

This was one of our favourite places to walk in the evening / at night. Just next to the river you'll find this narrow alley, be sure to not miss it.

There is an almost endless choice of restaurants on the left and right. On the right - especially at the beginning - there are the restaurants with the river views. The mostly have similar (and overpriced) menues. But if you came for the view....maybe then that's an option. It is hard to choose from these many restaurants - be sure to make some research, because there are some really great ones - and also overpriced tourist traps.

The alley is quite long - if you follow it to the end. Especially in the front it is pretty much packed with people....and gets less later on.
The street itself if very very lovely. Dark lighting, traditional buildings....very charming. It's a good stroll....before or/and after dinner. We loved the "Issian" (grill) at the end of Ponto-Cho and the "Copain" with gourmet kushikatsu.

Even though sometimes it's hard to walk due to the narrowness and the amount of people this is really a must-do.
