Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

Gion in the evening is a great experience. Many tourists come by buses to see the old Japanese houses. It is a crowded area which is in competition with Ponto-cho, the quarter just across the street. The old Maiko houses try to keep their historical image - there are Maikos quite often in the streets although waitresses are wearing traditional clothes without being Maikos. The river benches attract many people who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The whole Gion district is worthwhile watching - even the organised events have their charm.

Interesting streets of old houses, shops and restaurants. Can get crowded when bus loads of tourists descend on the area but well worth the visit. Head down at dusk to see the lights of the establishments cast an “ancient” feel to the place. Don’t hesitate to venture into the dark alleys where there are more old bars eateries. Worth the visit if you are in Kyoto.

Oh yes you may see a Geisha if you are lucky.

So as you'd expect, really crowded with tourists. Consider coming early in the morning, if it's a quiet stroll amidst old buildings you want, keeping in mind the stores open later. With a bit of exploring you'll find quieter sections even once the tourist crowds come in, though.
