Gion in the evening is a great experience. Many tourists come by buses to see the old Japanese houses. It is a crowded area which is in competition with Ponto-cho, the quarter just across the street. The old Maiko houses try to keep their historical image - there are Maikos quite often in the streets although waitresses are wearing traditional clothes without being Maikos. The river benches attract many people who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The whole Gion district is worthwhile watching - even the organised events have their charm.
