We stayed in Kyoto for a few days and decided to spend our last night there in a ryokan. We chose Watazen because it was easy walking distance from the hotel we had been staying and because it had received good reviews. The room is large and sparse as you would expect and the futons very comfortable for sleeping. We had seen reviewers talking about meals they had enjoyed at Watazen but when I enquired at the desk I was told that there was no food and nothing could be ordered. Maybe it's part of a package only deal? The tea and coffee maker was actually a flask of hot water which was, naturally only luke warm in the morning which was disappointing. Everyone was polite as all staff have been everywhere we have gone in Japan. I guess we expected a bit more for the price which was quite a bit more than we had paid for a hotel in the same area. Can't check in until 4pm and then you have to be out by 10 so not much time to enjoy the room. View was of the building across the road. Pretty clean apart from a long black hair in the shower recess which wasn't ours.
