Watazen
Ranked #52 of 395 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 April 2014

Location
It's about a 15 mins taxi ride from Kyoto station, well "hidden" in some small streets. Within walking distance from Nishiki market.
It's a 4 storey building with traditional japanese rooms.

Rooms
We took the 8+4 Tatami Mats guest room with private bath. It's big and spacious with a small balcony with a small desk and 2 chairs, perfect to enjoy the winter breeze and do some reading or surfing.
Futon beds are laid out after dinner.

Service
Staff is always helpful. Despite the language barrier, they tried their best to understand and help.

Since the Ryokan is not near the main road, you could request them to call for a taxi for you at no extra charge. Alike most hotels in Japan, the check-out time is early. Upon checking with the front desk, they could help to arrange for luggage transfer + storage to Kyoto station for Y750 per luggage and that really save us the trouble of travelling to Kyoto station to store it before moving to other places.
The elderly lady owner make an effort to come to our room and wish us a pleasant stay in Kyoto!

Meals
2 meals everyday are included in our room package and we certainly enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to try a full Japanese course. Dinner is served in your room whilst breakfast is served in the dining room on the ground floor. We had Japanese traditional dinner on the first night and everything is so fresh especially the raw fish. 2nd night dinner was "Miyabi Nabe" which is Watazen Ryokan's original cuisine that is offered only during the winter season.

Breakfast is small pickled dishes with grilled fish which is really a wonderful experience trying their traditional food culture with a nice little garden as the background.

Thank you for your staying at Watazen.

We are so happy to hear you that you enjoyed Watazen's dishes.
Many guests feel our location is very convenient to go to sight seeing places in Kyoto.

There are many small temples and shrines in Kyoto. And also, many interesting places.
Please try to explore "deep Kyoto" next time.

We are looking forward to seeing you soon again.
Thank you for your comments.

This stay made my trip. Excellent service, real Japanese roykan experience. Location is excellent, right in the middle of an area with many local shops and close to the Nishi Market. The traditional Japanese dinner in room is very well presented and explained. And the Madam visited us during dinner to make sure everything is ok. Highly recommended!

We stayed in Kyoto for a few days and decided to spend our last night there in a ryokan. We chose Watazen because it was easy walking distance from the hotel we had been staying and because it had received good reviews. The room is large and sparse as you would expect and the futons very comfortable for sleeping. We had seen reviewers talking about meals they had enjoyed at Watazen but when I enquired at the desk I was told that there was no food and nothing could be ordered. Maybe it's part of a package only deal? The tea and coffee maker was actually a flask of hot water which was, naturally only luke warm in the morning which was disappointing. Everyone was polite as all staff have been everywhere we have gone in Japan. I guess we expected a bit more for the price which was quite a bit more than we had paid for a hotel in the same area. Can't check in until 4pm and then you have to be out by 10 so not much time to enjoy the room. View was of the building across the road. Pretty clean apart from a long black hair in the shower recess which wasn't ours.

A wonderful location with kind and helpful staff. We walked to many places. The walls are a bit thin so you do hear other guests. Additionally, the smell of traditional Japanese breakfast permeates the entire place each morning. Basically grilled fish smell. They have a laundry room so it's great to take advantage of that if you're light packers as we are.

This hotel is a gem. I stayed for three nights with my son and we could not have asked for anything better. The rooms are large, the futons are comfortable, the spa bath downstairs is clean, the breakfast was fantastic and the staff were extremely cordial. Many nice little touches. You are within walking distance of Gion, Southern Higashiyama and lots of stores and restaurants as well as convenience stores. It's on a small, quiet street and has a very authentic feel. I would definitely stay there again.

This place is right next to Nisiki Market and the Shopping Arcade, less than half a block away, and is only around 4 blocks from Sanjo and Karasuma Stations.

I recommend getting their breakfast deal. Not only was is super cheap, but it was sooooo good! Very traditional tastings and different every other day!

We had a very warm reception and the Kaiseki dinner was AMAZING!
I had a lot of questions about Japanese food and our guest kindly answered all of them.

It was a great experience. I really recomend Watazen Ryokan.
