“Tidy traditional room in good location with good breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014 via mobile

Clean Traditional tatami room in modern hotel with mat floors, futons, safe, closets, tv, low table. A modern bathroom with push button toilet is clean if small. A communal bath and soaking tub for each gender is good for relaxation after a day seeing the sights.
Convenient location close to main bus/subway lines, a large covered shopping area, the canal and Gion. Another big convenience is the free laundry in the hotel. Large and good Japanese breakfast spread they switch up each day is a good stArt every day. The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful even if their English is only decent.
Note this is not a traditional ryokan, but a modern hotel with traditional room and amenities. For us, it was a good blend if a bit expensive. The hotel is perhaps 20 years old and not much updated but very clean and well maintained.

Spent 5 days in Kyoto for vacation with my two sons. Found this ryokan to be excellent value compared to similar ones in more "touristic" areas such as Gion. Location is very convenient at 3 minutes from a subway station that can take you almost anywhere. Room was surprisingly spacious- they actually joined 2 rooms so we had a separate sleeping area. The service was impeccable, even when English knowledge was insufficient, the staff was eager to help, patient and persistent until all questions were answered. Traditional breakfast was delicious as well as visually beautiful. Events in the lobby- mach tea, koto concert, etc.- added to the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. A rack of umbrellas for loan at the door was very helpful during two rainy days of out vacation. And finally the hot bath in the basement- outstanding relaxation after a long day of walking.

My fiancée and I stayed here while on our trip in Kyoto. We enjoyed all the help we got from the staff and the great breakfasts that we ordered. The ryokan also had festival games that the guests could play for free along with other more traditional entertaining events. We got to try Japanese tea ceremony and origami both events were conducted by warm and friendly people who answered any questions we had. We choose an eastern style room the main tatami room I believe was 16 mats.

Would definitely stay here again. The staff is quite friendly & helpful (English better than most too). Location is superb & the food is really good. This is my 3rd time visiting Kyoto & I just love it! The hot baths are wonderful & help if you do a lot of walking during the daytime. I took a bath every a.m. & p.m. b/c it was so relaxing & felt so wonderful. I can only say good things about this place & that I would definitely stay here again in the future!

Room Tip: all of the rooms that I saw appeared to be nice. The street is a quiet street. Not to worry, just bo...

Great bath~ really! It's my first time to take a pubilc bath in my life and, so interesting!
Room is quite good with lovely notes left on the table.
Location is a little far away from the main road if you take your suitcase and get there by walking.
And, in Apr, it's rather a bit to expensive (lol).

We were looking for a traditional ryokan experience in Kyoto and heard this place was lovely, but were quite disappointed. I think the prices were increased for Golden Week and we paid about $500 for one night for two people, including breakfast and dinner. However, neither meal was the traditional experience of being served in our room (the meals are in a common dining room), and there was nothing particularly special about either meal, though they were kaiseki style. Additionally, the public bath is very small (3 people would be crowded!) and basic, and the water is just tap water--not an onsen. The beds in the room were already laid out when we arrived in the early afternoon, so we never got the traditional turn-down service and the room was quite cramped the entire time. The attached bathroom was also very cramped and minimal for the price. The staff was friendly, and we did get to see a tea ceremony, but it was entirely by accident as we were never informed that there was one. We have stayed in much better accommodations in Kyoto, not to mention Hakone and Tokyo, for much less. In short, I would not recommend this place.

We stayed in Nishiyama Ryokan during the spring holidays this year. It was the perfect season to see the sakura ! We had a great time there and the ryokan was perfect. Very attentive hosts, big family room to accommodate all of us, great public baths. The location is perfect and within walking distance from Kyoto center. Bike rental available and recommended. Would definitely come back !
