While you can go to most any temple/garden in Kyoto and be impressed, Gio-Ji is truly unique. A lazy path takes you around a beautiful lush moss garden. The dense overhead foliage provides nice shade, making the walk very pleasant. If you are in the Arashiyama area, do not miss this site!

One of the best Zen gardens we have seen. The temple is 30 mins from the Bamboo grove but worth the trek.

Ensure that you pay a visit to the silk scarf botique 200 mts from Gio-ji. You can design and make your silk scarf in this place. The owners are fantastic and very caring. My 9yo loved every minute of making a silk scarf and took him a hour to dye and dry! Their number is 075-468 1681.

Gioji may lack the obvious impression of the other temples in Kyoto but it was a gem. I arrived at 4 pm and the light cast a soft ethereal look ...as though one was entering a world of elves and fairie creatures amidst a Japanese garden. It's a very quiet good walk and something very different than the other sites. I had no regrets venturing here.

A beautiful temple, down a lane way and under the green canopy. A serene setting without the throngs of tourist. Someone mentioned is was expensive? I think they misunderstood. It is Y300 ($3) and a quaint little walk.

The moss coloring is surreal, they almost glow. A tranquil setting.

I felt like this temple wasn't worth it's out of the way location. The trees and moss were great but because its not close to many other sites worth seeing I'd skip this one if you don't have a lot of extra time.
