“Brand new hotel, good location and view of the canal.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

This is a brand new hotel so you feel that clean newness. Still feels like they're getting the hang of it but they do strive to meet all your needs. sometimes there was a language barrier when ordering something from your room.
One time our breakfast took a really long time when we were checking out but they didn't charge us for it so they do make up for their mistakes if there is one.

The lobby restaurant service is quite slow.

The bathrooms and rooms and very conveniently set up and it's up to date tech wise without being too annoying.

The Main shopping street was walking distance. We loved the Kyoto vibe and this hotel was an easy pleasant place to stay in.

Thank you very much for your review and of course your wonderful comments we are so glad that you enjoyed your time with us here in Kyoto.

The hotel Indeed the location is very central here in Kyoto and only a stone’s throw away from all the entertainment of the Gion ( downtown Kyoto ).
The rooms themselves are quite spacious with a mix of Western and Japanese decor which makes your stay a real Kyoto experience.
Of course all of the above would be nothing without the touch of our Ladies & Gentlemen dedicated to servicing you in a way which only The Ritz Carlton can do.

We thank you again for your comments and most of all feedback in which is so important to us here, we hope to see you back one day again and until then from all of us here at The Ritz Carlton Kyoto wishing you all the best and of course safe travels.

A spectacular new addition to Kyoto's hotel scene opened only two months. Wonderful location overlooking the Kamogawa River which runs thru the heart of Kyoto. Outstanding Japanese design, and apparently no expense spared. And with the hotel only recently opened, service was at times a little spotty. But an excellent staff and attitude. Give them another a six months and they should be great.

We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto as the first leg of our Honeymoon. Everything was perfect! From location to room and everything in between. The hotel was very helpful in arranging transport from Tokyo to Kyoto. I would recommend the property to anyone it is right on the river and I would run 3 -5 miles and enjoy the natural beauty.

Maybe the most beautiful hotel we've ever stayed in. Attention to detail in craftsmanship is in evidence everywhere throughout the hotel. Breakfast is excellent and very pricey; be sure to book the breakfast pkg. Rooms are stylistically stunning although as others have mentioned, they could use more space for guest clothes and less fitted out drawers for tea sets and champagne glasses. Walter, customer service mgr, night mgr Simon and La Locanda mgr Lucia?went out of their way to make our stay special (each speaks excellent English). Virtually no one else speaks English which causes real problems especially with the hotel operator and concierge who are practically useless due to their lack of language skills. Having said that, we love this hotel and highly recommend it. It has only been open 2 months and Ritz Carlton is aware and addressing the language issue. Clearly, THE place to stay in Kyoto.

I read quite a few reviews of the Ritz Kyoto prior to my 2 week trip through Japan with my wife. I was a bit concerned by what I read here and in other reviews but I can attest that all is well. We stayed in three Ritz properties in Japan (Okinawa, Kyoto and Tokyo) and all were excellent. However, in terms of going the extra mile, The Ritz Kyoto was a step above the others.

The hotel itself is new and wonderful. The location could not be better, within a short walking distance from Gion (which I could have spent a month exploring).

Where the Kyoto Ritz stood out was customer service. The staff - all of them - were superb and were able to handle every request as well as make fantastic suggestions. The staff handled our reservations for the bullet train to Tokyo (including picking up the tickets) and also helped us purchased tickets for a Seibu Lions baseball game when we got to Japan.

I would highly recommend taking advantage of the bicycles available for rent. Kyoto is a great city for biking or walking and many of the things you want to see are a short distance from the hotel. If you are there on Monday, take advantage of the bike ride to one of the nearby temples with Shizuko - she is wonderful!

One final note, we went from Kyoto to Tokyo and unbeknownst to us, there was a "handoff" between the two hotels. Apparently the concierges at each hotel has spoken to each other. When we arrived in Tokyo, they knew of our plans and what we liked to do. My wife and I were pretty amazed and impressed

Rest assured, all is well at the Ritz- Kyoto!

Room Tip: Anything overlooking the river is fine. We were on the third floor and had a good view.

The hotel has only been open since February. Designed by a Japanese architect, it has a very Zen feel to it; lots of running water, timber and screening of public areas. Considering its popularity, Kyoto is under-served by luxury hotels; Okura and Hyatt are probably the only real competition this hotel has at present in this segment.
Planning laws restrict the height of the building; it has about 250 rooms, across 5 floors, with restaurants and the spa below ground. On the reception level (ground floor), there is an excellent lounge/bar, great for afternoon tea. Breakfast is best taken in the Japanese restaurant on the B1 level.
Rooms are interesting. The bed is on its own island, with a headboard which separates it from the small hanging space, and rather more extensive bar and tea preparation area, behind it. The bed was wonderful; soft and large! My 4th floor room's outlook was to the backyards of nearby houses. Blinds and curtains are electronically controlled. A huge swivelling TV provides in-room entertainment, as does a disguised TV in the vanity unit. There is a deep bath and timber-floored shower in one room, with frosted glass, so natural light can be enjoyed while you soak.
Excellent staff, with a good level of proficiency in English. And yes, the entrance is spectacular! Be aware that not all taxi drivers know the hotel by name...better to give them the address, since they all operate GPS navigation.

We visited Kyoto recently to view the Cherry Blossoms, and spent 2 nights at the Ritz Carlton. The hotel is located just by the side of the Kamagawa river and our room, which was on the top floor of the low-rise hotel, had a view, through floor-to-ceiling windows, of the distant mountains and sunrise. The hotel entrance is discreet, off a small street, but the pathway into the hotel reception and lobby is very pretty, with streams of water, plants and rocks. Reception area is rather small. One has to walk past a fairly large pastry-chocolate-macaron counter, to get to reception. But the staff are warm and friendly - typical of the "ladies and gentlemen" of the Ritz-Carlton. Noticeably, a number of staff are not Japanese, eg.the night manager is from New Zealand.
Our room was a reasonably sized, and very cosy, with the elegant, minimalist decor of a ryokan, and all the amenities expected of a 5-star luxury hotel. Not only was there a Nespresso machine, but there was also a tea brewing machine ! The bed was a large king-sized bed, facing the floor-ceiling windows, (and the mountains) and very comfortable indeed.
The bath and shower area was a large, separate room from the wash-basin area (which was rather cramped), with a deep square tub for soaking and a separate shower next to it. On the other side of the wash basins, was the toilet, which was equipped with a super-modern high-tech seat !
We enjoyed a very good multi-course Japanese breakfast in the Japanese restaurant (which had a view of the lovely terrace area outside). Western-style breakfast is also available in the Italian restaurant one floor above.
Then we also had afternoon tea in the lobby lounge, which was very elegant.
Just outside the hotel, we walked along the river - a beautiful scenic walk, with cherry blossom trees lining the river and nearby streets. From the hotel, it's possible to walk to a few restaurants and shops nearby, but a taxi-ride is needed to get to Gion and the main tourist spots.
Overall, we enjoyed staying at the Ritz-carlton Kyoto. The cost of the room is very expensive indeed, but for such luxury and service in Kyoto, it's probably worth splurging for a couple of days !

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river have a lovely view.
