“Excellent home base for our week in Kyoto”
Reviewed 14 November 2010

We stayed a week while sightseeing in Kyoto. We loved the hotel. Service is top notch. The rooms were spacious for Japan and spotlessly clean. Minimal, modern expression of Japanese style. The bathroom was especially nice. Great tub and separate shower, very roomy. The bar and Japanese restaurant in the basement are gorgeous and terrific (and pricey). A few tips. Get a room on an upper floor or you will feel that you are in a basement. The location is remote and quiet, but no problem for those who rely on taxis, which are abundant and wonderful. The concierge gave us excellent restaurant tips. Just let them know whether you mind sitting on the floor or prefer table service. If you want to be more centrally located, the Okura is downtown in a more convenient location, but the Hyatt is prettier and quieter. The breakfast buffet was good but predictably pricey. Everyone in our group liked this hotel and would return in a heartbeat. The spa in the basement is quite good, too.

Great hotel to stay at. The rooms are roomy and is about 10 minute walk from the train station. The service is excellent and their staff can speak good English. The breakfast is great with excellent japanese and western food but you can only choose one or the other.

Definitely a great place to stay at in Kyoto.

A pleasant hotel with very good service and comfortable decor. Rooms are a good size (we were in a King Room) with a decent flat screen TV (some English channels inc. news and 2 movie channels), desk, chairs, good storage space, tea facilities, international voltage power points and a firm bed. Complimentary wi-fi is located in the hotel foyer, inc. the breakfast restaurant and ground floor bar.
Bathrooms are comfortable with the usual "wash toilet", small bath and generous shower room. Our room came with a stylish little wooden stool on which to to sit under the oscillating shower-head - a great way to take a load off your feet at the end of the day.
Which is a good thing, as the hotel's location, south of Gion (home to Geisha and some of the cutest Japanese residential architecture, both old and new), is not ideally located except to the Kyoto train station (where we arrived and departed by Bullet Train), which is only 2 minutes away by taxi. Unless you're given to walking, you'll be using taxis (expensive) and the local bus system (untried) to get to most of Kyoto's major sites. Kyoto's subway lives aren't convenient to the hotel either.
However, walking north-west and crossing the Kamo Gawa river will find Kyoto's surprisingly good shopping district. Kyoto possesses the distinction of being much like a sleepy provincial town while also having a pretty good little metropolis in its centre. Be sure to find the cheap and cheerful Teramachi covered arcade for some bizarro gifts and stores not found elsewhere in Japan, while other good shops are found between the streets of Shinjo dori and Oike dori. I'd suggest eating in this area as, besides hotel options, there's little in the way of choice when it comes to local dining in the hotel vicinity (except the likable Manzo inn, near McDonalds on Shichijo dori, serving decent Japanese fare). Don't bother with the mini-bar as there's a Family mart within minutes of the hotel selling lots of snacks and beers.
But, as with all of Japan experienced, the safe suburban streets separating the Hyatt from Gion-proper should not be feared when coming home late from sight-seeing. Don't miss the Manga Museum or the Nijojo Castle while in town, and it's hard to walk a block without finding a stunning temple or shrine.
A final note about the service, we were lucky enough to meet an ex-pat staffmember by the name of Campbell who was amongst the best I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. Great with suggestions for sites to visit not only in Kyoto but Osaka. He possessed an interesting insight into the local culture that I found informative and very helpful. Furthermore, the hotel was also able to assist us with the postage of a large package to be sent home following too much shopping in Tokyo. Having to only cover the cost of the postage, they looked after the rest and our package arrived home well before we did.

Stayed here last month on 4 day trip to Kyoto joining up with family travelling around the region. We were going to stay elsewhere as hotel was booked out and when they did find a room it was very expensive (>500usd).
The room was very comfortable with typical understated Japanese style and similar to what has been posted by other reviewers. The shower and bath area was very large and worked well.
Breakfast was of a high standard but lacked any local flavours and the tea and coffee was always disappointingly luke warm but as I said the food on offer was very good quality.
We ate at the main Japanese restaurant and thought the food was delicious - the atmosphere was a little quiet for our liking but we had a food meal. We frequented the bar a couple of times and the staff here were very friendly and professional and also went to management drinks which was a nice offer and Ken the manager was very welcoming.
Concierge - once you encouraged them to give a little more information than basic answers were very helpful and knowledgable.
Location - relatively quiet area of kyoto but right next to the Sanjusangendo Hall which is really worth a look and also not too far from kiyomozo temple which is a great place to wander around with all the small shops. Also short ride to Kyoto main station which in itself is worth a visit.
Overall I would say if the price had been more reasonable it would be a 5 rating as we really enjoyed everything about the hotel - nice room; friendly professional service; good gym; lovely brekkie etc but at the amount you are paying you would expect extra's - such as pool, outside areas etc but would definately recommend if you can find a reasonable rate.

The Hyatt is located 5 minutes from the train station in Kyoto and offers complementary transportation to and from the train station. The concierges and front desk people went over and above my family's expectations. The only thing missing from the hotel is a swimming pool which my children would have enjoyed after a day of sightseeing. Rooms were spotless and beds very comfortable and modern. Great buffet breakfast in the morning as well as a la carte menu.

The staff at this lovely, medium sized hotel in Kyoto are simply outstanding. From the very knowledgeable concierge desk attendants (who recommended some wonderful restaurants and helped us plan all our itineraries (including transport)) to the impeccably polite, helpful and efficient staff at breakfast service (the Grill), we were constantly impressed by everyone we came across.

The rooms were elegant, simple and (I suspect) quite a decent size for a Japanese hotel. The building is understated - a curtain of bamboo separating it from the road - and it has a minimalistic, clean, Japanese interior. It is by no means in the centre of town, but is close to the beginning of one of the recommended tourist walks, next-door to a temple and served well by buses (and of course taxis).

As a general comment on Kyoto, it was one of the most beautiful cities I have visited and the food was simply outstanding (and surprisingly reasonable). An excellent destination in that you can walk all day seeing sights of grandeur and beauty and then indulge in amazing food (the experience of which is enhanced immeasurably by the venues and the presentation of the meals).

This was our first visit to Japan and we are so pleased we chose this hotel. It was one of our most satisfying hotel experiences of recent years. Simply an excellent all-round experience; from the design and lay-out of the bathroom (of particular import to S) to the lovely ambiance and bustle in the main reception. The hotel had a wonderful ambiance that made you feel relaxed, welcomed and secure.

The Hyatt Regency is not a grand hotel in the sense of its scale or opulence, but rather a much more accessible and relaxed destination. It was totally in keeping with the Kyoto we experienced: its beauty was in its simplicity and elegance; it didn't need to be brash to establish its worth. We would highly recommend this hotel.

We loved the position of this hotel - 5 minutes by taxi to the train station, 1 - 5 minutes walking to a bus or the underground. Some buses passed right by. Considering this it was very peaceful - no noise in our room at all. It was great for getting to various temples etc.- some are right in the neighbourhood. The food and drink was very expensive but there are other places to eat nearby and there is half-price happy hour in the bar. We loved it and would stay again.
