Best ryokan experience

Review of Yoshida-sanso
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Nov 2023
Yoshida Sanso was our best stay during our vacation Japan by far. The property is a boutique ryokan with only few rooms, thus the rates. The rates are totally worth the experience. We were able to travel back in time. The staff was very friendly and communicated with us without any problems. They made sure we had a enjoyable time in the property. They had recommendations for where to walk around and eat in the area walking distance.

Traditional ryokan in a house built by a member of the royal family in the 1930s, original timbers. Very peaceful and immersive. Optional dinner was really excellent, served in a private room, as were the Japanese breakfasts. Lovely stay.

Staying at Yoshida-sanso feels like traveling back in time and being a part of history. The owners is doing an amazing job preserving the ryokan. We stayed for one night in the main house with the shared bathroom. Luckily we were the only guest on the floor that day, so we had some privacy. The shower/bath is downstairs, which we also had to ourselves. The ryokan is impeccably clean, perfect room temperature (outside was in the 30s), and bed was comfortable. We had both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, with breakfast being the most memorable. The tamago omelette was out of this world! Afterwards we enjoyed coffee in the cafe overlooking the main house. Everyone was hospitable, offering to take photos and explaining the history of the ryokan. It is a bit of distance from the busy streets of Kyoto which makes it a perfect retreat. It's once of a lifetime experience especially if you're into architecture and Japanese history!

We were there for 3 nights and it was great. I'm still amazed by how nice the staff was.
If you are looking for a place to relax in Kyoto this is a good choice!

Rooms are very traditional style, nice and clean.
Food was great, we had breakfast everyday and dinner one night, both excellent.

The staff was the best part of it, everyone was so nice and kind. They recommended us some nice restaurants, called and booked everything for us.

Feels like the private villa is a bit too expensive compared to the other rooms from the main house but a part from that everything was awesome.

Room tip: Good location in Kyoto!

This is one of the premier Ryokan in Kyoto with a great meal service offered. I have had lunch twice here with a traditional menu and accoutrement. One of the best meals I've had in Japan and will go back.

From the outset this was an outstanding experience, we were met and immediately engaged by the owner who made us feel very welcome. The room was beautiful and comfortable with a view over the garden, and the surrounding Northern Higashiyama area and temples.
Dinner was exquisite, served in a beautiful private room, kaiseki style, presented on beautiful pottery and laquerware. The cuisine was excellently chosen for the season and paired well with a local sake.
Breakfast was similarly wonderful, and we were seated in a beautifully appointed room upstairs overlooking the local area. The Japanese breakfast was excellent, and included yodofu and other local specialties, again presented beautifully.
We had matcha in the tea house before leaving with wonderful crackly old jazz records playing, with very kind and thoughtful service and attention to detail.
A wonderful experience.
