“Excercice and something different”

We went there on a very hot day, not realizing you have to walk to the top of a mountain. We managed to do that, however, and we're glad we did it. It was a nice change of scenery from the urban Kyoto (as well as Arashiyama in general). The monkeys seemed to have nice living conditions and what impressed us was that the place was run on their conditions, not ours (tourists). Not that pricey either and the view from the top was impressive.

“Fantastic city views and monkey interaction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

I was not too keen at first when our family decided to make the trek to the top of the hill where the Monkey Park is located. We went after lunch on a very humid day. While most of the hiking up the mountain was in the shade, it was strenuous after a busy day of other sightseeing. By the time we made it to the top, I was exhausted and ready to jump in a lake to cool off. Surprisingly, I was greeted by a smiling staffer at the park who gave me a cool wipe and ushered me into their air conditioned shelter blowing cold air from various vents towards people entering the doorway. Refreshments can be purchased from the vending machines. There is enough seating inside the facility for all the visitors and clean restrooms to use. Inside, you can purchase food to feed the monkeys: fresh cut apples and peanuts. They show you how to feed the monkeys safely from the inside through the mesh wire. Monkeys cannot enter the facility and must stay outside, free to roam the mountain. Watching the monkeys being fed was entertaining, especially when the baby monkeys took food out of one's hands. The staffers offered to have the monkeys pose for photos outside with visitors. The best part of the visit here was the sunset views of Kyoto city and the surrounding mountains. Great panoramic photos. I'm not sure I'd want to make the trek from the bottom anytime soon, but must agree that it was an experience I won't regret.

“Fantastic Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

We were pleasantly surprised as this park exceeded our expectations in every way. Though the climb up was reasonably high it was not overly difficult even though the weather was warm. It was very pleasant walking up through the Japanese mountainside forest enjoying the views and the kids like the information signs about the monkeys on the way up. We were amazed to see a number of monkeys naturally in the forest before we even got to the top. At the top we were concerned these would be monkeys that tried to steal things but the monkeys took no interest in you outside the feeding station and you could watch the monkeys interacting with each other, playing in the pond or climbing in the surrounding forest. Inside the feeding station, the only place where you can feed the monkeys, everyone really enjoyed the experience of feeding them either peanuts or apple which you purchased at the feeding station. This arrangement of feeding only from this area had kept the monkeys nonplussed towards tourists when in all other areas of the park. Another pleasant surprise was the beautiful views across Kyoto from the park. Finally a kid's playground with huge slide was another little surprise before enjoying the walk back down to the bottom. Don't miss this great experience.

“Worth the tiring uphill trek”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

We were lucky that it wasn't hot at the time. Even so, the trek (a zig-zag combination of slopes and steps) going up was tiring and long. Fortunately, the path was mostly shaded by the surrounding trees. There was, surprisingly, even a huge fan that was set up and turned on at one point in the path. Unfortunately, there were mosquitoes. We were definitely relieved when we reached the top.

We rested on the benches, watched the monkeys do their own thing, fed the monkeys from inside the feeding shack and basked at the view of Kyoto. We took plenty of pictures. The highlight of the visit was when one of the park employees gave my friends and I the opportunity to take a group picture with the monkeys as they ate the food given by him outside the feeding shack.

“Awesome Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

Great mild-moderate hike to the top of this mountain. There are monkeys everywhere. You can hand feed them and can't help but smile as their tiny hands gently take a piece of fruit from your hand. Cut fruit is for sale at the top of the mountain for about $1 per bag. This was a good temporary detour from the typical shrines and temples we saw during our trip. As a bonus, you get a great 180 degree panoramic view of Kyoto from the top of the mountain.
