“Very nice and comfortable Hotel”
Reviewed 27 February 2013

We booked this via www.jalan.net at Yen6000 for a semi double room. Very nice room, clean, tidy, bright. We were 2 hours earlier than offical check in time, but they let us in and put us on top floor of the building with beautiful view over Nagano City. Reception desk very efficient and polite, English speaking. Hotel located in front of of Nagano JR station and within 3 mins walk. Nagaden Bus booking office is just at G/F of the hotel building where the bus terminal is also. Very convenient.

This hotel is very good value for money with modern and clean rooms right in the heart of Nagano.
There are heaps of restaurants right on your doorstep & free in-room internet comes as a nice extra.
It would be the ideal place for somebody that is looking for a hotel close to the main station.

However, if you can’t read Japanese you may have trouble finding the place.
The main hotel sign on top of the building is in Japanese only, and with the hotel lobby being on the 5th floor of a building complex this place may proof a little tricky to find.
We spent a good 30 minutes wondering the area, walking much further then we need to because we simply couldn’t identify the place.
Just a little hint: You will be able to see the station from the hotel. There is no need to walk down into any of the adjacent streets, it’s one of the buildings you can see from the station square.

Would stay here again should we choose to come back to Nagano

We arrived by train at about 10 pm and the Sunroute was a less than 2 minute walk from the station. It's a bit difficult to identify the hotel, it is actually a few floors of a building almost directly opposite the station-but we would have missed the entrance except from the helpful and polite Japanese pedestrians. Very comfortable room, friendly service and reasonably priced. Would have been happy to stay longer but as a stopover - excellent.

This hotel was renovated two years ago. One would have thought they had just finished renovation as every aspect of the room we stayed in looked new. The front desk spoke broken English which was sufficient for check-in / check-out.

Firstly, be careful that the Sunroute hotel chain has two hotels adjacent to Nagano Station. HOTEL SUNROUTE NAGANO-HIGASHIGUCHI (ホテルサンルート長野東口) is not this hotel and is located East side of the station (the side the buses to Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, Nozawa Onsen, etc departs from). This hotel is "ホテルサンルート長野" and not visible from Nagano station.

Location:
Location was why we picked this hotel. It took us 10 minutes from the time we left our room to ticket gates of the Shinkansen terminal. That included
- Man-handled 67kg of luggage (with just my wife and I)
- Check out
- Waiting for 4 lifts – 2 in the hotel, two in the station (we were not going to try an lug the 67kg of luggage up the various stairs between the hotel and the train staion gates)

Finding the hotel
The entrance is small, nested between two shop fronts on street level. The easier way to get to the hotel is to take the escalators - they're on the other side of the road from the train station and visible from the train station (before going down to street level). Take the escalators to the 1st floor, turn right and walk along the elevated walkway (next to an outdoor shop). The hotel entrance is where the shop finishes.

The Room:
The room was reasonably spacious by Japanese hotel standards. The bathroom was larger than expected - see photos.

Booking / Cost.
We paid Yen3500 per person for a twin room for one night, under their "Plan Great room type" special without breakfast. The rate at that time, with breakfast was Yen7000 per person.
This special was only available on their Japanese web page and not the english page. It required a search without specifying room type, smokeing preference, etc. Smoking / non-smoking preference can be selected at check-in. Google-translator was invaluable in working out the meaning of the Japanese webpage. We were not asked creditcard details or deposit when we booked.

Dinning out
The hotel lobby has a touch screen with suggestions including directions and discount vouchers. We went to Ibushigin which was ~5 min walk away. Word of warning. No English at Ibushigin, but the food was worth the risk of not knowing what we ordered. We had a fantastic night. Am awaiting Tripadvisor to add restaurant onto their site before posting review.

The beds were very comfortable, which came as a great relieve as we had to catch the 6am Shinkansen to make our 11am flight at Narita. We train to Ueno and then changed to the Skyline. This worked out to be much easier than changing at Tokyo. The walk is shorter at Ueno and the station much less crowded.

Negative comments
1) the air-con controls. While the reception gave us english instructions the air-con unit didn't seem to respond to them. It took ~15min to work out how to get the air-con going.
2) it is the ONLY place in Japan in our two visits that we were provided with green tea powder instead of tea leaves for tea .... found this odd.
3) the entrance is not the easiest to find after a journey to get to Nagano

Cost us 12,450 Yen for a twin room, breakfast included. The room was clean and reasonable size for a business hotel. Beds were comfortable. It has a coin laundrey. Hotel reception is on the fifth floor. There is a convenience shop on the first floor.
It is a five minute walk from the main entrance of JR Nagano Station. It's a bit hard to locate at first but if you stand in the main entrance of the station and look down the road you will be able to see a large red and white communications tower. Head towards that.
