For a budget hotel that only costs around US$20 a night (yes! no typo!), this place really goes beyond your expectation.

First of all, for that price, you get your own private single room with TV, fridge and a small table with mirror. I stayed in a Japanese style room, it didn't feel cramped at all!

The toilet and shower room are shared, but they are very clean. Toilets are located on each floor and the shower rooms on the ground floor.

There's a pantry on the ground floor, with all the basic cooking utensils available. At the sitting room area, there are many mangas for those of you who read Japanese.

The best thing I like about this hotel is the free bike rental. The bikes are quite old but they're free, so who cares! Thanks to the free bike, I saved a lot on transport for my day trip in Osaka. For those who need to travel to the airport, there are also discounted train tickets for sale.

This hotel is located in a relatively shabbier area of Osaka, but it felt pretty safe to walk around. The neighbourhood are mainly inhabited by old people so the prices are relatively cheaper than Namba or Umeda.

This is really quite a heaven for budget travellers and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: Girls should request for a room on the ladies' floor- it just feels safer to be around fellow la...

We stayed at the Business Hotel Mikado for one night before heading to Kyoto-shi. The hotel is offering a number of free rentals I'm sure backpackers would enjoy - free use of bicycle, free use of computer, minimum rental for laundry and dryer.

Also take note of the schedule for using the shower room, which is located on the ground floor. The hotel has separate shower schedules for male and female guests. Toilets, meanwhile, are available in every floor.

Business Hotel Mikado is near Dobutsuenmae Station and a few minutes away from Tennoji Park.

The hotel is very closed to subway train. Friendly staff. One or two spoke good English, but all were helpful. Room is small for single but it has standard amenities. Shared toilets in every floor, shared showers on the ground floor. Free wifi, access to PC, free bike. Laundry n dryer for ¥100/each. Within walking distance, there is a local market with good n cheap eateries and many convenient stores.

Room Tip: For women traveler, ask for room on the 8th floor (women only).

Stay 4night (end of mar) during my arrival to kansai n 1night (april) before i leave japan. 1st time at 2nd floors single n 2nd stay at 6floors single room. Room not big, but consider the value r super satisfy.

they have shower room n public bath, but i think most foreigner will consider shower room. shower room r clean but small to big guy, some time dirty becoz of the user, wear dirty shoe to bath area n trow the unwants things inside. pls clean ur HAIRS before leaving bath area (use shower to flush away), throw rubbish in bin, leave ur shoe at the tray provided n PLEASEeeee, not urine at bath area. toilet r clean too.

Hotel come with drinking water taip. Fast internet access with 4units pc (at least, sometime the notebook missing, dont know y), very fast room wifi. living room not big, feel noisy when too many people talking.

Hotel r easy access to major attraction, airport n other cities, coz of Nankai, JR n subway very close. so u can choose to use JR pass or Kansai Thru pass. u can walk from hotel to Osaka Shinsekai, them to electrical street/maid restaurant st, continue to dotonbori n shinsaibashi.

Sure it is quite cheap and close to a subway station, but i can't believe the reviews of others about being the best hotel they ever stayed in etc. The room was simple, but dirty, bathrooms were dirty and to get to the (dirty hairy) shower rooms you must take the elevator first and stand in line at the reception (showers are next to the reception). Therefore i don't know how they got the travellers's choice award of trip advisor and i don't think most of the reviews are real. I do have to say that the people at the reception were (like most japanese) very kind and if they would clean up the place it would suit them better.

The cheapest way to get here from Kansai airport is by the Nankai Railway ordinary train, which costs Y890. Once you alight, take the 'southeast' exit of Shinimamiya station and the hotel is a 15 minute walk. Not too hard to find, once you've found your bearings.

True, the hotel is located in a place where you may find seemingly homeless men. I saw one taking a piss at a streetlight one evening. Some reviewers have commented the area as being rather dingy, but it is certainly not 'dangerous' This is not like the US, where stepping into a suburb may mean you getting caught in a crossfire between rival gangs, or where thick, black men in baggy trousers and hoodies watch your every step like eagles to its prey. No, the homeless people in this area go about their own business even at night; in fact none ever approached me.

I must commend the nice girl who checked me into the hotel after my long flight. Like most of the staff, she could converse in English rather well. After settling my bill (very, very reasonable price!) she explained some of the hotel's facilities like the bath, shower rooms and even gave me an introduction of the area with a printed map. When I checked out, she even remembered the date I would be coming again (following week, after visiting other parts of Japan).

My room was a Japanese-style room, which means tatami style floor with a fold bed. There are western style rooms, but I wanted to experience the Japanese way of sleeping. Clean linen provided, I had a good night's sleep though I was sleeping on the floor. The room itself may be rather small, but there is enough room to store luggage, there is a TV, small fridge and air-conditioning unit provided too.

Toilets and shower rooms are shared. Each floor has its own mixed gender toilet, with the exception for the ladies-only toilet on the eight floor. During my stay, there was no issue with using the toilet. Some floors have toilets with bidet and seat warmers, some floors have one squat toilet. There are 3 shower rooms on the first floor. Sometimes there may be a queue for the shower rooms, especially if you come at morning peak hours. The shower rooms are clean with good hot water pressure and good quality soap and shampoos (not those lousy types in small bottles you find in other parts of the world). I did not visit the bath during my two stays.

Near the reception area is a 'lounge' where you can obtain boiling water for noodles or hot beverages, and drinking water (I drank tap water from the toilet when I was too lazy to take the lift down). There were some condiments as well; I did see a Japanese man making ramen and cracking an egg at the pantry area. There were many comics too along the bookshelves and a few PC terminals. The hotel has wifi in all rooms, so I did not need to use these PCs.

When I visit Osaka again, I'd certainly be back at the Hotel Mikado!

Room Tip: Good if you can get a room on the second floor, as the open-air staircase can be used to avoid waiti...

near Shinimamiya JR Station (5 min walk), dobutsuenmae subway station (2 min walk), and JR Namba to kansai airport. it makes you easy to get anywhere. its also near Spa World and Zoo.

you can't found any restaurant or food stalls around this area, if you need something to eat, you can go to 100 yen shop (2 min walk), 2 Lawsons, and a family mart.

i was surprised about hotel mikado's facilities and amenities. they provide complete kitchen utilities and basic seasoning+cooking oil, hot water and green tea every morning, bath and face towel for free (you can change every take a shower), free rentals: hairdryer, big mirror, iron, bath robe, shampoo for onsen (japanese spa), bicycle, etc. and yes, they have onsen with 4 different schedules.

they have 3 shared shower rooms in 1st floor and 2 toilets (so smelly), so if you're ladies and not smoking, choose ladies floor (8th floor), they have 2 clean and fresh toilets.

they sell JR namba tickets to kansai airport, 100 yen cheaper than you buy in the station :)

Room Tip: if you're ladies and not smoking, choose ladies floor (8th floor)
