“Sauna with a surprise.”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Went to Spa World for a sauna and relax because my hotel didn't have these facilities.

Mooched around the differently themed and heated pools and saunas. All quite okay but not very luxurious or sophisticated.

Liked the salt sauna where you can grab handfuls of sea salt and exfoliate and sting to your heart's desire.

So, I did as expected and walked around "naked as jaybird" trusting that I would not be appearing on Youtube as "Sucker of the Day" and as far as I know, that has not happened.
The big surprise came when I walked into the main thoroughfare between themed rooms to find a fully clothed Japanese lady standing there, hands on hips, watching me approach. A quick rescan of the hall confirmed I was indeed with other naked men and in the right place. The only fazed person was me.

She was a masseuse. Who knew? She asked if I was interested in a massage and so I had this weird surreal exchange, naked and awkward, wondering what the appropriate etiquette for such a situation should be in "conservative" Japan. What a surprise...and no I didn't!

Room Tip: Seems there is a rolling deal for Y1000/day entrance available on Mondays. I think I might have been...

We were looking for a hotel with onsen in Osaka on 5 April. As that day was Saturday almost all the good hotels were either fully booked or too expensive. Through trip advisor we manage to find only City Plaza Hotel which has onsen bath at its roof top. However through some more search we found an even better Onsen hotel - Spa World Onsen Hotel. Luckily they still has 2 western rooms left on 5 April and the price was a reasonable 22,000 per room.We came from Kansai Airport and have no problem finding the hotel by exciting from Dobutsuen-mae station. However the hotel is still under renovation with its front gate sealed and their check in staff could not even spoke simple English. Its was after some hand signal , chicken and duck talk before we get our keys. Everyone has to take out their shoes and hold it to walk towards the lift and then the room. The rooms are surprisingly spacious, clean and comfortable. As it was Saturday the spa were crowded and we have to wait to use each bath. Check out time is strictly by 10 am and 2000 yen will be charged for every hour delay. Overall a pleasant stay and the location is good, just 3 stops to Namba and walking distance to shopping area, Tennoji park and zoo.

Room Tip: Choose Western room with attached bath

We tried the water park on the top floor was fun! If we are earlier we should have bought the day pass for it. The spas is good however gotta book your masseurs earlier as we didn't get it - not enough masseurs. The food there not fantastic but good enough for me. You Should Be Here!

The JPY1000 entry promotion was still on when we visited in Dec 2013.

I stayed mainly at the family onsen (level 8) where there is both outdoor and indoor spa. Must go to the outdoor spa (Bade zone) as it is nice to feel the coolness of the winter weather while soaking in the hot spa. For those who are afraid of cold, the outdoor spa is connected to the indoor spa, so you do not have to get out totally of the warm water.

The kids also had a fabulous time at the water rides. Be sure to get the day pass at JPY1000 per child and you can cover back the cost easily with 4 rides. They had a fabulous time on the rides.

The single sex onsens looks great also. Should visit if you are comfortable going there.

There are many rest and relax corner at the Spa World, and the changing room is well provided with toiletries.

Don't miss it.

Once in a lifetime experience, you won't forget it! Totally relaxing. Only $10 and you can stay there however long you want, many different spas to choose from including salt and herb saunas. Best if you go in alone for your own privacy.

This spa is very nice (even if advertisement are really too much compared to the truth)
But it has just shown me how extremist could be japanese people especially in kansai...because I got a tattoo. Ok it's forbidden but I am looking like a real westerner, my tattoo is small and I didn't annoy anyone but people complain about that and I have to leave the place.
Kansai people are cool? No way, I will never go there.

Honestly before I went there I was a little skeptical, but since my sister had booked a night there we might as well give it a try. The hotel turned out to be quite pleasant and the onsen quite enjoyable.

Place is next to JR/Nankai Shin-imamiya and Subway Dobutsuenmae stations. And it's right next to Shinsekai, where you will find cheap snacks and a lot of famous and traditional stalls selling Kushi-katsu, which is battered, deep fried beef/chicken/pork meat + innards on a stick. Definitely a must-try.

Reception is located in a small counter next to a gate where you will be let in, and receptionists don't speak good English. As the hotel and the onsen share the same lobby you have to take off your shoes as you enter the gate; recommend that you store your shoes in the lockers in the lobby near the exit. Counter will issue the room key card and a bracelet, which you can use to buy stuff from vending machines, pay for your meals, and get small change for lockers esp. in the onsen itself.

Hotel room is basic, but tastefully decorated and clean. The onsen is rather interesting, seems to be quite popular with Japanese families and even high school students in groups; however the place is kept very clean and wasn't over-crowded or noisy. There are a variety of onsen/sauna you can go for, some with herbs and all that, including a weird one where they put Chinese wine into the pool. Didn't really fancy that one. Personally liked the open-air jacuzzis on the 8th floor; when we went it was at night and there was no one around, we had the place all to ourselves and there is a fatastic view of the Tsutenkaku Tower.

One thing though - breakfast wan't good. I would say it'd rank between bad and terrible, but there isn't anywhere you can go to for food around there early in the morning. Would suggest that you pack in cup noodles.
