Good hotel and sincere staff, but NOT for solo travellers.

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Oct 2016
Hotel Wako is cheap and has very good rooms. Private rooms are under $20 and have a TV, aircon and fridge. Staff, although not English-speaking, try to help. It is a five-minute walk to Osaka attractions like foodie paradise Shinsekai and water park Spa World. BUT it is in the notorious Nishinari district (I would not say much; look it up). The hotel is, however, right in front of the police station.

Do stay if you are backpackers travelling in a GROUP - it is a different side of Japan and you will learn many things while there. It is also easy to move around from here - train stations are nearby. Do NOT stay if you are a solo female traveller.

I stayed here for two nights to take a weekend city break. I arrived after midnight and check-in is open 24 hours (some other hotels of this class may close at 11pm or they may impose a surcharge for late check-in). Check-in staff can speak a little bit of English and there is an 1-page English guide for foreign people. The hotel is shabby. it is at a neighbourhood with many similar budget hotels. It is an old district but it is safe. In fact, a police station is just opposite to the hotel.

I have been allocated a room in the 4th floor. It is a Japanese style room which is clean enough to sleep. There is a TV, a freezer, and a cabinet to put things in. WiFi is stable and with average speed. AC is cool enough and you can switch to heater mode as well. The neighbourhood is quiet so sleep quality is good. The blankets and sheets are also comfortable to make a good sleep (in some other hotels i do get bites from small bugs). However, rooms do not include toilet and shower. For toilet, there is a shared toilet at every floor, but it is not very clean. Also, there is only western-style toilet at odd number floors. The others are Japanese style toilet which I am not going to use. For shower, there is only one shower cubicle in the first floor. To use it, you have to get the key from the reception and return it afterwards. This is quite inconvenient. Bath towel is also not included so make sure you bring one if you decide to stay here. You can also buy one from the hotel. On the other hand, as an alternative you may consider visiting the Spa World nearby for 1100 Yen (discounted ticket is available from the hotel). Kitchen closes at midnight. There is a water dispenser at the kitchen with cold water and hot water.

Service is fine. You can’t expect to get the same service as in a standard hotel, but the staff is kind enough to help. They can help with storage bags and receiving parcels on your behalf.

All in all, I listed some drawbacks of the hotel which bothered me, but in fact this is still a value deal given the low price. If you can get through it you can save a lot by staying here. You may also consider similar hotels in the neighbourhood as well.

Room tip: You may want to stay at odd-numbered floors, which have western style toilets.

If you are alone and want to save money for a day or a good place. Excellent room has enough space. But should take into account that if you like a clean place. So it does not. Recommend only to sleep and leave in the morning and return in the evening

I will recommend solo traveler to Osaka to stay here. Cheap and quiet. Only thing which is not convenient os the shower room, it which there were time allocated for men and women. The most privacy place of the hotel is in the room. Warm bed and good working aircond.

I stayed in this "hotel" for a couple of nights with a friend. We had 2 single rooms. Rooms are small and look like a prison. The only good thing was the free and efficient wifi. There's only one bathroom for women, one for men and a common bathroom (with no toilet in it). Although the shower was decent, it is very uncomfortable to shower in. Check out is at 9.30 and we've been waken up at 8.30 by a staff member without previous notice.
The area is poor but there is a metro station very close from which you can easily get to the center. It's a very cheap place to stay but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, maybe only to men who just need a place where to sleep for a night.

The Hotel Wako in Osaka is probably the dirtiest place I've ever stayed in. The only clean thing in my room was the bedding. The toilets are pathetic, the showers are not well maintained. The location of the hotel near the red light district is not very recommendable. You can see from the windows of the rooms on unkempt yards and homeless. But the ofuro located in the hotel was very pleasant and that alone ofuro retains the hotel before an "unsatisfactory" rating as. Why the hotel is classified as a business hotel, is a complete mystery to me !!!

Room tip: My conclusion: Who can, who should avoid this hotel Wako necessarily !!!
