Owner description: Once the largest castle in Japan when originally built in the 1580s, this castle has an observation platform with city views and a history museum that uses holograms, 3D pictures and other technologies to describe the history of the castle and the period during which it was built.

After Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, the Aquarium and the Tenjin Matsuri Festival 2013 we felt like something a bit more quiet, so we headed to the Osaka-jo.

It is a very nice castle...surrounded by a very lovely park. The castle itself is pretty massive (and made out of concrete ... the original is long gone). There's no fee to the park or the castle area. Only if you want to go inside. On the castle's hill you have some great city views. There's hasn't been many people at the time we went - around 10am on a weekday. So it's good time to avoid the big crowds.
If you have some time to spare in Osaka, this castle is surely worth your time, even if you aren't interested in castles and history. Be sure to roam around the park for a while too.

This castle was first built in 1496 by a high-ranking monk. It was a large temple and held great power and influence until 1580 when it burned to the ground. Another castle was built in this spot by Toyotomi but after his death it fell during the War in 1615. A reconstruction began in 1620 and it took 10 years to complete. The castle played a major role as the base for the Shogunate's control of western Japan. Once again it was destroyed by fire. The site was used by the army as its' base and in 1931, the main tower was reconstructed and operates as the museum today. The area surrounding the Castle was destroyed during the war but has been restored as apark for the historic site. It has interesting grounds and a 5 floor museum outlining the history of the castle and replicas from the periods. There is also a chance to dress up in some of the fashion of those days...interesting and fun to do for a photo op.

visited Osaka Castle in March with friend. the castle is in detail although they were rebuilt. We paid for the admission. a clear direction took us to the top floor, we can see far from East, West, South and North of Osaka!
On the ground floor, if you pay little amount, you could have to try the traditional Japanese outfit for photo shooting!

I love this place and since I arrived in Japan, I visit there once a week. It is a great place to relax and to breathe fresh air. It is also a great destination for doing some exercises especially jogging and cycling.
