Opened only a year ago. Fabulous hotel. Unlike most Intercontinental hotels I know (including those in Tokyo), which are all solid 4 star hotels, the Osaka Intercontinental is a step up, 5 star all the way, competing head to head with the St Regis or Peninsula or Four Seasons type hotel. The room was very grand (to be fair we were upgraded, I am IHG Platinum), with spectacular views. The service of the staff in both the hotel itself, and the restaurants, was impeccable (our request to be seated between meals, at 10.30am, caused them inconvenience but they bent over backwards to accommodate us).
If you are arriving for the first time via Umeda or Osaka stations: even though it is close, don’t try to get there underground. Get to street level. Find the red Hep Navis ferris wheel, the Yodabashi store, or the Intercontinental building itself (it has the name at the top) to get your directional bearings. The stations underground are rabbit warrens and the Intercontinental is not easily accessed via the mall level (although you will be able to figure the route when departing the hotel, as opposed to arriving).
