“Mixed bag of goodies”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

Stayed here from December 24th-28th 2012.

This is a grand but dated hotel. It is clean and the shuttle service to the train station makes it very accessible. My friend and I stayed in a twin room on the 11th floor so had a very good view of Osaka, nearby park and overlooking apartments if voyeurism is your thing.

The front office was friendly but didnt seem able to properly cater to English speaking staff (and sadly my Japanese is pitiful). Other places I had stayed at provided adapters at request for use of laptops but this place did not. The LAN internet worked well and thankfully the cable was very long.

The hotel has a restaurant that we did not use because there was so much variety at the train station for food. Sadly no wedding took place during our stay but it seems like a good wedding venue if that is important to you.

So overall I would recommend this as a "base" for travels for you to get about.

Having been priced out of the Kyoto market and at the advice of a website decided to stay in Osaka and found the Osaka Garden Palace. The hotel specialises in weddings and it is very grand as you arrive. Rooms are of a good size with the standard bathroom of deep bath with shower attachments. Only gripe is the lack of air conditioning and can imagine that this can make it stuffy when hot. Staff (as is the case everywhere) willing to help and the shuttle bus to and from Shin Osaka runs 4 times an hour and is very punctual. Using our JR passes we were able to get to Kyoto from Shin-Osaka in 12 minutes. Also took trips to Hiroshima and Himeji via bullet train from Shin-Osaka. If you are arriving via shikansen exit central gates and turn right, continue to the end of the concourse keeping Tullys coffee shop to your left. Turn sharp left at Tullys and walk towards McDonalds. Turn sharp right at McDonalds and exit through the doors on the right. There is a lift there. Take it to the ground floor and exit left and walk past the stairs to the metro, the stop for the hotel is on the right just by the vending machines.

We had mixed experiences in our two stays in a four day span in September. We stayed on a Saturday night and then the following Tuesday night.

The pluses - a very nicely decorated exterior and nice common areas. Good breakfast buffet - both Western and Japanese and very efficient. Great views of central Osaka and of Shinkansen trains approaching Shin-Osaka station from the west from room 1139, which also had a queen bed. Small, but not cramped rooms (smaller than either the Tokyo Garden Palace or Sapporo Garden Palace, for reference). On our second stay, we found the front desk staff very helpful and friendly, but see the comments below. The hotel offers a great shuttle bus service to Shin-Osaka station, and see below for more comments on that. Very reasonable rates for a mid-level hotel with good access to a major transportation hub in Japan's second largest metro area.

The negatives - bad check in experience on our first stay. Very difficult to communicate with the front desk staff during our first stay. We arrived at the hotel at approximately noon on Saturday. There were five of us traveling together. My wife was going to stay behind and the other four of us were going to a baseball game as a part of our tour. Now I perfectly understand that check in time was 3:00 pm and would not expect to get in our rooms at noon. However, my wife remained in the lobby and they would not let her check in until 3:00 pm, despite letting others check in considerably earlier and also sending our luggage up to the room well before 3:00 pm. This latter behavior is very hard to accept. The next morning, four of us wanted to leave some luggage at the hotel and not take it on our two day excursion. Fortunately, I did not have to witness or experience this, but it took one of my colleagues 20 minutes and extensive use of Google Translate to convey to the front desk staff what we wanted to do. They were obviously equipped to store luggage, and it should not have taken 20 minutes to communicate this.

The shuttle bus service to Shin-Osaka is excellent. It takes five minutes, leaving the hotel at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes and leaving the station at 05, 20, 35, and 50 minutes from approximately 7:30 am to 11:00 pm. The Shin-Osaka station allows you access to JR Shinkansen and local trains, as well as the city's Midosuji subway line into central Osaka (there are frequent JR trains to Osaka station in central Osaka as well, if you are using a rail pass). Additionally, there are plenty of lighter side dining options at Shin-Osaka station. The drop off and pick up points at the station are on opposite sides of the street on the north side of the station near an entrance to the subway stop and lot #5 for bicycle parking. The hotel offers maps of the shuttle pick up location but they are only in Japanese. I will try my best to describe where to pick up the shuttle if you want to take it to the hotel upon your arrival. When you exit the ticket gates at Shin-Osaka, you will most likely exit onto a long east - west concourse (look for Aunt Stella's - that is on the east - west concourse). Turn right onto the concourse and follow that to a large cross north - south concourse. Turn right onto the north - south concourse. Alternatively, and once on the north - south concourse, look for Tully's Coffee and / or McDonald's (or signs to them). Stuck between Tully's and McDonald's is an elevator, and in front of McDonald's / beyond Tully's is an escalator. Take the elevator or the escalator and a set of stairs to street level and turn left and walk about 100 feet and you will see the sign for the shuttle pick up. it is under overhead railroad tracks at the #5 sign for the bicycle parking lot. There is a subway entrance between where you come out onto the street level and the pick up point, so the shuttle is very convenient for subway riders.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms have better views. Our view in room 1139 was unobstructed of central Osaka and a...

I was transiting in Osaka and stayed at the Palace Garden
for one night. I booked it from the airport hotel counter. They
had a few choices for nearby hotels. There was free transfer
to and from the airport. It's a small hotel but very clean.
It's located off the main road and is accessed by a very
narrow road just wide enough for the shuttle bus. The room
had a number of amenities, shaver, tooth brush, comb,
bath robe. There was a Toshiba lcd broadband tv.
