i feel obliged to leave a review before i forget, after staying there for 8 nights. this place only serves female travelers at my time of visit, so it's good for lone female or a small group of female travelers.
we initially booked 2 nights, but after seeing the convenience of the location (1min from subway station, 15mins walk from osaka jr/umeda subway), we extended the rest of our time in japan there.
the place is old and everything looks worn out. lights are dim, but it kind of has a homely feel. the deco is the quirkiest i have ever seen, never fails to bring a smile to me. like the previously reviewer said, first floor is the common area with tv, a large table, shower and toilet, while upstairs is 10 bunk beds, lockers and kitchen. the beds were relatively spaced out with high ceilings. the beds are soft and comfy, bed sheets clean, i slept very well each night. the shower is big (relatively, as compared to dorms in tokyo) and bright. it doesn't lock (there's a curtain) but no big deal since it's an all girls dorm. sinks in the toilet are still out of order, but there's a tap over the flush where you can wash your hands when you flush. toilet is old but doesn't smell (unlike other dorms that i have stayed in other places)
after staying there for the first few nights, the place started to feel like home. throughout my 8 nights there, the hostel was quiet, only 3 other nights when there were other lodgers besides my friend and i. which was really nice for us, we definitely appreciated the privacy after staying in some over crowded dorms in tokyo (no rustling of plastic bags in the morning!).
the main reason of writing this review is to show my gratitude for the owner. she (a lady probably in her early 30s) was really nice and friendly. besides the basic services (maintaining the place, clearing the bins everyday, keeping toilets and sinks clean), she went the extra mile. i stayed there alone on my last night as my friend was scheduled to leave 1 day before me, hence i had a entire house to myself. worrying that i would be afraid of staying in hostel all by myself, she went back home to bathe, came back with her dogs to keep me company, and slept in her room downstairs!! it really gave me a peace of mind that night, as the place did not exactly have the strongest security system. she also insisted on waking up to see me off in the morning, though i left before 7am.
i highly recommend this place to small groups/single female travelers who are looking for a cheap, convenient, simple, and comfortable (as in homely, rather than luxurious) place to stay in.
