This was our first visit to Japan, and we were unsure what to expect with regards to the size and state of budget accommodation. We therefore only booked two nights at Hotel Taiyo, but upon arrival, promptly booked another three, we were so impressed! Sure, the hotel is a little old, the rooms tiny... but this is Japan! Space is a premium.
The rooms are (as one would expect in Japan) Japanese style, meaning you sleep on thin mattresses on tatami mats, which are surprisingly comfortable. Rooms are sparsely decorated (small refrigerator, TV and open wardrobe), which means that you don't feel cramped or claustrophobic, despite the low ceilings. All rooms have a window that opens, plus air con, so there is plenty of natural light and fresh air.
There is a shared bath (onsen) on the ground floor for segregated bathing (men from 6-8.50 pm; women from 9 pm to 12 am) as well as two private showers open 24-hours.
Free wifi is awesome - there are wifi routers on each floor, so you get a strong signal in your room.
The hotel is located literally opposite the escalator to the subway, and there are plenty of eateries and convenience stores nearby. Breakfast was not included in the rate (but you could opt for a boiled egg and two pieces of toast for 300 yen), but the hotel does provide two hot water urns plus a microwave, so you can cheaply self-cater (given the myriad prepackaged meals, noodle bowls etc., available at all convenience stores).
Overall, we could not fault this hotel, and recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap, clean place to stay in Osaka.
