Hotel Taiyo
Ranked #163 of 341 Hotels / Ryokan in Osaka
Reviewed 27 October 2012

This was our first visit to Japan, and we were unsure what to expect with regards to the size and state of budget accommodation. We therefore only booked two nights at Hotel Taiyo, but upon arrival, promptly booked another three, we were so impressed! Sure, the hotel is a little old, the rooms tiny... but this is Japan! Space is a premium.

The rooms are (as one would expect in Japan) Japanese style, meaning you sleep on thin mattresses on tatami mats, which are surprisingly comfortable. Rooms are sparsely decorated (small refrigerator, TV and open wardrobe), which means that you don't feel cramped or claustrophobic, despite the low ceilings. All rooms have a window that opens, plus air con, so there is plenty of natural light and fresh air.

There is a shared bath (onsen) on the ground floor for segregated bathing (men from 6-8.50 pm; women from 9 pm to 12 am) as well as two private showers open 24-hours.

Free wifi is awesome - there are wifi routers on each floor, so you get a strong signal in your room.

The hotel is located literally opposite the escalator to the subway, and there are plenty of eateries and convenience stores nearby. Breakfast was not included in the rate (but you could opt for a boiled egg and two pieces of toast for 300 yen), but the hotel does provide two hot water urns plus a microwave, so you can cheaply self-cater (given the myriad prepackaged meals, noodle bowls etc., available at all convenience stores).

Overall, we could not fault this hotel, and recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap, clean place to stay in Osaka.

We were in the hotel for only one night. It is well located. Very close to the metro station. You can leave your luggage in storage. The rooms are small. They include a bamboo mat to sleep on and a wardrobe and shelf. A little stink. Breakfasts are also payable - 300 yen. Priced at about $ 20 per person is worth it.

This hotel is quite old but it is in a convenient location, you couldn’t get much closer to the subway and the city loop line is very close too. The area has a few homeless people around but they don’t bother you at all. There are a few convenience stores around the place and a shopping arcade and restaurants within a ten minute walk. The rooms are quite small so its fine just for somewhere to sleep but a bit cramped if you intended on spending all day in it.

Room Tip: Mostly are all the same, it doesn't really matter what room you have

Very easy to find (close both to metro and railroad train stations) and great price for private room (comparing to hostels). It is also close to Tennoji park, which offers plenty of restaurants and entertainment. Hotel itself is quite old and corridors may look a bit haunted:) But for a single overnight stay, especially on the way from Kansai airport, it is unbeatable.

Me and my Husband stayed here for approximately 5 nights. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful with good English. The rooms were clean and tidy. My only complaint was the smell, we were staying on the 5th floor and I'm guessing that at some point the whole hotel was smoking and I think the tatami matting has soaked it up, like all smells you get used to it though. Other than that was a nice stay.

Stayed 3 nights with my wife at this hotel during our trip to Osaka.

Plus points
- Cheapest ever in osaka
- Public bath is a great experience, as we do not go for Onsen.
- Free Wifi and sharing PC is definitely a great one.
- Clean room
- Accessible to major station and near to ShinSeiKai
- English speaking staff and they are friendly

Minus point
- 2 sharing shower room only for the entire hotel. Need to wait for your turn, else can go try public bath.
- Old and slight odor tatami Japanese bed

With the money I paid, I do not complaint.

Room Tip: Try to ask for room where Western toilet (sitting) is available, if you are picky and not used to Ja...
