Shin-Osaka Youth hostel
Ranked #70 of 316 Speciality lodging in Osaka
Reviewed 27 October 2013

I spent here 3 nights in 2 different moments of my journey in Japan. The location is ok (5 min from shin-osaka train station) and easy to find (don't understand some critics in previous reviews..).

the japanese style public bath is an excellent feature when just landing in kansai airport from europe. free wi fi, big lockers, english speaking staff (very friendly and keen to help) tidy, nice rooms. generally speaking price is worth it, altough curfew can be a problem for some people I dare to say it's the cheapest option in osaka, so of course there are pros and cons.

great view from the 10th floor but you can skip breakfast: better choices even inside the train station - but hey: it's an hostel after all. I'd reccomend it for a short stay.

I used this youth hostel literally for a stop over on my way north. It did the job but I wouldn't stay there again.

It was close to the train station, although I had difficulty finding it at 11pm and had to ask in a hotel and restaurant to find it. (come out east gate of train station, cross the road, turn left then take the second right down the big road. Then go down the road and its next to the building on the right with the big yellow sign down the side of it with a phone number on it. You have to walk past the small chain fence into the pathed area and on the right is a lift. It is the 10th floor of this lift that you want)

It was big and the facilities were good. It was open late. everything was clean. The staff were helpful and friendly.

The problems were it was very noisy which was a problem for me as I was only staying 6 hours and didn't arrive until after 11pm so thought it would be quiet by then but the number of rooms seemed to lead to there being endless noise in the corridors.

There was also only one shower (for the females) which being late was no problem but I can imagine there must be a big queue for it a peak times. There is a communal japanese bath. The bath/shower room is also on a different floor to the dorms which is very inconvenient.

The lift is also public so there are any number of other people in there and although the hostel is on the top two floors so any member of the public would have no reason to be in there, there is no way to stop them. Which does lead me to wonder how safe the dorm floor is other than the lock on the dorm room itself (which relies on all the people in the room locking it when they come in).

The socket on the side of the bed is on the side of the light but in my case this was too close to the end wall to be able to fit a plug with plug adapter in so i couldn't charge my phone that night.

The kitchen is well equipped and there is lots of space to eat.

Towel hire is 100 yen

New and modern but above average price, the most expensive hostel I paid for in Japan.

Pros: free wi-fi access, quiet and comfortable dorms, friendly and helpful staff, very clean, great common room.

Cons: although the location is central, it's very difficult to find as it's located in a parking lot. We tried to reach the hotel by e-mail to get the directions to the hotel, but the e-mail address they give you when you book is a wrong one. The bathroom schedule is too tight, as it's only accessible from 7 to 9AM. Same for breakfast.

It's a very calm place. When I stayed there a lot of groups of young student stayed there. It did not really feel like a backpackers type hostel.
For my purposes if was fine as I just wanted to get some sleep before heading on in the morning. The rooms where quite big and clean which was nice. I think this hostel suits family or groups teh best and solo travelers looking to meet some people the least.

I booked this hotel primarily because of its central location and the fact that I am a YHA member (but surprisingly didn't get a discount at this hostel). I stayed at a shared room which is immaculately clean that included a spacious locker. The hostel is quite spacious for a Japan hotel and offered great views of the city because it is on the 10th floor of a tall building. It is quite easy to find from Shin-Osaka train station's east exit.

There is free wifi which is good because most "backpacker" places in Japan don't offer this.

However, please note that this hotel has a strange rule that you are not allowed to stay in your room from 10am to 4pm and 12am to 6am. If you are the party type or want to take their afternoon nap, this hostel might not be appropriate. During my stay, the hot/cold water in the shower was also fluctuating. All of the staff are english speaking which is an advantage.

Room Tip: Don't bother with the breakfast upsell - food is dry and bland. There are lots of cheap places t...

We just returned home from Japan today. Shin-osaka was the last place we stayed before returning home to Australia.

Shin-Osaka Youth hostel is a great, clean, convenient hostel, very close to Shin-Osaka station. Staff are kind and they go out of their way to make sure things are available to you. For example you can buy amenities, rent yukatas and other things.

Hostel is located in a larger building. Floor 10 is the reception, lobby (for wi-fi and lounging around) and dormitories while Floor 9 is twin rooms, japanese style rooms and more dormitories.

Perhaps the worst thing (and something you must know before booking) is that you have to be out of the room between 10am and 4pm. For my husband and I this was the worst especially when he felt sick one day and we didn't have the option of staying in our room. When we asked they said all the rooms are cleaned but after we returned nothing had been touched in our room. For most people this won't be a problem though as they've made the lobby area as comfortable and convenient as possible. (Free wifi, manga, couches and tables)

That is the only reason we won't be returning to this hostel and it's not a very bit flaw - my husband and I are just very private people.

At times it can be a bit noisy - For the first day we were close to the lobby and there were 3 groups of school students staying. We slept absolutely horribly but after the first day we were moved to the 9th floor and it was absolute heaven. Not many people and very quiet.

Room Tip: Twin rooms are very nice but if you want to go cheap the dormitories are okay. Bathroom facilities a...
