Toyoko Inn Osaka Nanba
Ranked #93 of 339 Hotels / Ryokan in Osaka
Reviewed 12 August 2013 via mobile

Toyoko Inn is like the Starbucks of business hotels chains specializing in budget accommodations for businessmen. If you've stayed in a Toyoko Inn, you know what to expect, down to the disposable foot slippers. There's a clean bed, TV, Toto toilet with the bidet options and a Japanese-style deep tub with great shower. Breakfast is your basic carbs and caffeine (rice balls or bread/croissants with coffee and tea) and some modest side dishes.

A strength of this Toyoko is its location just a short walk away from Nanba station, one of Osaka's transportation hubs. You're also close to the attractions of the Dotonbori and the shopping at Shinsaibashi, among many other things. Close to the hotel you'll also find two shrines, one involving a huge head.

This is my first choice whenever I'm in Osaka. If you like Toyoko Inn's modest, reliable style, sign up for a lifetime membership card (about $12USD at this moment) that'll allow you to reserve early on their website with a small discount and free accommodation with enough stays.

Overall, a good budget option in a good location.

Although there may be other similar hotels in the area, this is actually quite a good location. Just 5-10 minutes walk (about 3-4 blocks plus walk indoors to the train platforms) from the Nankai train station which also connects indoor to the Namba subway station. Nankai trains will take you straight to the airport without any transfers so it's quite convenient even if you have to travel with luggage. Then the Midosuji subway connects you to other areas like Shin-Osaka, Umeda, and other popular subway lines. The Nankai and Namba station area is actually an area with lots of shops and beside it, the Namba City, upscale Namba Parks, Takashimaya and if you walk further you can reach Dotonburi area, Kuromon Market, Dogayushi Street (kitchen ware), and Shinsaibashi shopping strip. Not just for shopping, these areas are great for sightseeing, people watching and trying the popular takoyaki and okonomiyaki. JR station is a little bit farther from the hotel but walkable too, but not as convenient for this line. The hotel faces a large street (Motomachi) but is not as noisy as expected except for a little bit of the train and traffic sound from lower floors.

The rooms and bathrooms are small, but is average by Japanese standards. It's hard if you have large luggage but they say you can put this under the bed. Yes, but they don't really offer a lot of space for the stuff you take out of your luggage, only 3 hangers on a rod on the wall. So even if you can put your luggage under the bed, you still have to pull it out every so often to take/put your stuff. Single and double economy are pretty much the same with a double/queen bed so paying for the double economy seems to be not worth it. If you are two people, get the 2 single beds instead for more space. The room and bathroom is pretty clean. They also offer cleaning every 3 days instead of every day for a discount on the room. Even if you choose this eco mode, you still get fresh towels and tea bag refill which is hang on your door. I think this is really cool.

The lobby is combined with a small eating area with a long table and a bar counter. It's basically the breakfast area in the mornings and a waiting area the rest of the day. They have a water dispenser and an ice machine which you can access all throughout the day, plus of course the usual vending machines. This is a great option. We've had two times we had to take out food and eat at the hotel and it's good that we don't have to stink up the room with food smell. We can just eat at the lobby before heading for the room. Besides, the room is small, haha! Breakfast is a bit crowded, sometimes, you have to wait to get a seat but the turnover is quite quick. Breakfast fare here is basic and Western, regularly have breads which included excellent croissants (they're really good!) and macaroni or potato salad. Some days it has scrambled eggs. And of course, coffee, orange juice and milk. I wish they had at least some sausage or ham. Another Toyoki Inn I went to serve Japanese food and seem to have more variety than this one.

Ladies get a free gift pack upon check-in with a few choices of toiletry stuff, e.g. wash cloth, hair clips, face mask. There are also other toiletries like shaver, comb available at the reception area for free. Night robes are available in a sanitation cabinet at the lobby area for guest use. You can just get one yourself before heading to the room.

The hotel also has a laundry room, this one had 2 sets of washer and dryer. 200 yen for wash and 100 yen for a 30-minute dry. And 30 yen for detergent. These are usually in use in the evenings. I did not have to wash during my stay in this hotel so it wasn't an issue.

Hotel offers free wifi, which can sometimes be a bit limited (viber does not work here). They also have two workstations at the lobby if you need a laptop. They might have a printer too but not sure. They also have lots of maps and guides. Check out the flyers/brochures for some possible discount coupons to the attractions.

The hotel only has 1 elevator and yes, this could be inconvenient if you are in a hurry, especially in the mornings or if there's a lot of you with luggage. But during the rest of the day, it is ok.

The reception staff were great, really helpful and friendly. We've had to change rooms for 2 consecutive nights because of the unavailability of a non-smoking room that day. The reception handled our transfers effectively. Of course, there's just that hassle of having to bring down our luggages every time, but they made sure it was safe. Big luggages were kept under a net at the side of the reception while small bags/packages were kept inside the reception area.

I had a package to send as I had the impression that they had a post office or receiving station, but they sent me to the actual post office about 2 blocks away, which was not such a big deal.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the top floors if you are a light sleeper, at lower floors you can hear the train and...

Toyoko Inn has a very high level of chain consistency, so all their branches are almost exactly the same (practical and cosy) and therefore very predictable. This particular one is an exception in that instead of the usual skeleton Japanese-style breakfast (miso soup, rice and pickles), they serve the Japanese interpretation of a European meal: spaghetti in tomato sauce, salad, scrambled eggs and bread. I would normally prefer Japanese-style breakfast, but their bread rolls and baguettes were superb, amazingly for Japan, whose population still seems to be trying to grasp what bread should be. This Toyoko's bread tasted obviously freshly baked, in plentiful amount (even though the Japanese usually count the slices) and really as good as you would get it anywhere in France, no less. I was impressed by it and also by their coffee, which was present in excellent electric filter hot-plate machines. With unlimited margarine and strawberry jam, I couldn't ask for more.

The location is not the best but good enough. It's about 5 to 10 minutes from the Namba train station from Kansai airport and 10 to 15 minutes to Dotonbori. As with other Toyoko inns, rooms are small but clean. Breakfast is ok, bread, croissants, egg, coffee, salad and soup.
Downside is there is only one lift and the breakfast area is really very limited.
If I can't find a really good deal on a really good location, I will opt to stay at Toyoko Inn because their hotels are typical and consistent. So you know what to expect.

We booked this hotel, not to visit Osaka, but just to go to the airport.
From the outside the hotel looks a bit old, but inside everything is great.
Our room, a twin, was big, compare to some other Toyoko twin.
As usual you have free wifi, tea, aircon, television.
The free breakfast was also delicious with great croissants and all sort of breads!
The hotel is also well located, not so far from JR Nanba which give an easy access to the airport.
Further more there is a really big supermarket just nearby with great prices!
For the ladies we receive a small set with beauty products.

So if you go to the airport this toyoko is really great!

our group of 14 people stayed in this hotel for 8 nights. we booked online. a few days before, we had to make some reservation adjustments, and they were very accommodating and helpful over the phone. we took the KATE airport limo bus from kansai airport to OCAT station, and from there, it was a 15-minute walk to the hotel.

room: the only downside was the space. it was quite a challenge to pack/unpack two big suitcases and 2 carry-ons in the tiny area without placing them on the bed. otherwise, it was ok. it had a fridge, a tv with dual language settings, a hair dryer, a coffee/tea set and a trouser press. the bathroom had a tub and the usual toiletries. thw whole room was very clean.

lobby: the reception people were so polite and quite proficient in english. they had english/japanese maps of the vicinity on hand. there were vending machines for drinks, a microwave, a hot/cold water dispenser and an ice machine. near the restrooms was a small laundry room for guest use; separate charge for washer and dryer. beside it was a tall uv closet with nightgowns for guests. the lobby also doubled as the breakfast room, with enough seating for about 20 people. breakfast fare included freshly baked bread, salad, sausages or eggs or spaghetti, coffee and tea.

location: the hotel was a 5-minute walk to the nearest station (sennichimae/yotsubashi), a stone's throw from family mart (convenience store), and about 10 minutes from maxvalu (24-hour supermarket). across the street was a branch of the tsurumaru restaurant chain, a great place for cheap but excellent food.

*if you're walking down motomachi, all you will see is a white and blue sign saying HOTEL next to some kanji characters. i printed the hotel name in japanese prior to our trip for reference. the bright blue sign on the roof is also reflected on the buildings around it, so it's hard to miss.
*leave your key with the reception staff if you want your room cleaned
