“helpful staff and good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2013

we were there december 2012, the rooms are small by australian or european sizes but all you use them for is somewhere to sleep as your out venturing about most of the time, so found it no problem. Nice and clean, and staff very helpful, breakfst was very good, organic food, traditional japanese or if you just want cereal or toast you can have that. would easy go back and use this hotel again if we went back to Nagasaki, nice location for catching trams or buses and general shopping,

Great central location, with lovely rooms and good service. The Victorian feel of the hotel was really quaint! The highlight though was definitely the breakfast - set in a quiet dining room, the buffet breakfast is without question the best I've ever had - all macro / organic traditional japanese foods I could have stayed all morning eating it! The dining staff were so lovely and kept the buffet open past the official closing time each day since we were late risers. Also excellent value for money! Can't recommend enough.

The rooms are average. We stayed here when it was the Holiday Inn and not much renovation was done under the new management. The photos made the rooms look better than it really is. Although it is old, it is clean. The draw for us was the fabulous Japanese organic breakfast. Lots of selections and prepared with care.

The hotel is centrally located, though tucked away from the main road. The hotel staff are very helpful and the room is of a decent size for a couple. The breakfast buffet is quite a spread and definitely worth the price you pay.
The style of the hotel and bar gives a very Victorian feel and ambiance. Very tastefully decorated, the common areas.
The room, though is quite basic compared to Japanese standards with all basic necessities. The A/C was a window type and could barely cool the room at the recommended setting. A higher setting was not recommended by the hotel for fear of breaking the A/C. This was quite disappointing for a otherwise comfortable stay at the hotel.
As informed in other reviews, the tram station is just outside the hotel and fares on the tram are a flat 120yen.
The TV provided did not have the pay option for movies.

Very pleasantly surprised by Victoria Inn. From check-in forward, the entire experience was a great one. Excellent communication skills from the front desk, loads of useful tourist information in the lobby, the room are big (for Japan), and the cafe bar oozes atmosphere. There is a happy hour from 5-8pm with select drinks only 400 yen. The breakfast on the 2F was outstanding. An organic buffet with loads of delicious local foods. I highly recommend Victoria Inn.

Nagasaki itself has loads to see and do. We spent two night there and it was barely enough. If you enjoy history, Glover Hill, despite its somewhat amusement park feel, gives a great introduction to the interplay between Japan and the west during the period before and after the Meiji Restoration. Dejima Village is also worth a visit. I'd go back again.

Location is superb! Chinatown is right next to it, major shopping arcade across the street. 10 minutes walk to beautiful Dejima wharf area. Streetcar to Atomic bomb museum is about 20 minutes, cost is only 120 yen. Taxi to JR station is about 700 yen. Starbucks is directly across the street, if you need a fix (although 450 yen for a grande drip and 500 yen for a small pastry is kind of expensive, but it is Japan!), along with anything else you could want.
Service if fantastic, the best English-speaking staff in Japan was here. I forgot my raincoat on a local train and the front desk receptionists were instrumental in helping me get it back (and being Japan, of course I got it back!) by helping me call the train stations, etc. Phenomenal service!
The downstairs bar offers 20 % off all drinks if you show your room key so happy hour was a good bargain (400 yen for a beer/well drink and 20 % off of that).
The only downside was the room, which was dated and a bit cramped, especially from the addition of a loveseat which made the room quite small. No central air, and the A/C unit was in disrepair and falling off the wall, although it did work quite well. Bathroom was also a little cramp. The bed was hard, even by Japanese standards, and possibly the hardest we encountered in 2 weeks. Definitely stay here for the excellent service and location, not the room. I would probably stay in a different hotel only because of the bed, unless a great deal came up.

Excellent location in center of the City right by a tram stop. We also stayed there in 2007 when it was the Holiday Inn. Well worth the cost.

Large rooms for Japan with easy walking to restaurants, shopping and the nightlife area. Staff was very helpful. The very good buffet breakfast is mostly Japanese so do not expect eggs over easy with bacon.

The air con in our room was fairly loud but we did not need it with the windows open. Before settling in to your room, you may want to turn on the air con to see if it is too loud so you can ask to change rooms if necessary.

You can buy a one-day tram pass at the hotel. Trams are an excellent way of getting around Nagasaki.

An American owned stand up bar - Kendall’s on Motoshikui near the Shianbashi tram stop by the hotel - with mostly a Japanese clientele was great fun. Just look for the large American flag hanging on the outside. Also fun is County Road, a county and western bar with a welcoming staff, just down the street from the tram stop on Maruyama-machi.
