The buses are poorly equipped with a dodgy tannoy, which is barely audible and doesn't always synch with what you see. There are no earphones and selected languages on this tour bus, just terrible English.
The buses are dirty and old, a couple had obviously crashed into high level trees as the windows were smashed at the front.
They don't run to time as the traffic is chaos.
We stopped at one stop far from the city for 'five minutes' which turned into fifteen as the driver had a chat an cigarette with other coach drivers.
Take a walking tour or taxis, this is the worst hop on hop off we have ever experienced.
It didn't help that at the start we stood for 35 minutes in pouring rain before our bus arrived! A bit longer then the advertised 20 to 30 minutes between busses! The route is very circuitous and we ften felt like we had been past the same pleace a umber of times - a real map rather then a schematic would have been helpful. When you have limited time this is not the best way to see the city - pick out the sights you want and get cabs - its cheaper and a better use of your time!
I had a great time on the bus. I went and boarded just after 10am and it was cloudy and about to rain, so temperature wasn't too bad. It rained quite a bit, but I brought an umbrella and was able to stay up top, where the best views are. I'd say the trip took just over two hours. There was some commentary as well, which was nice. The cost/price was 45 ringgit for a 24 hour ticket.
It's a great way to see and drive around KL. You can stop at sights and board the next bus, but I think it's best to go around and then figure where you wanna go but that's all up to you. Waiting for a bus in the heat can be exhausting.
And yeah, it's KL, the heat will be a factor. I was really feeling hot at the end with the sun and sitting in traffic was tough, no breeze at all. Just be aware though, the bus can't control the weather. But I wouldn't want to be there in the afternoon personally, but I'm a cold weather guy.
Either way, I really enjoyed it....good overview of the city.
Either the 24 or 48 hour pass on the Hop On Hop Off is a great way to get around Kuala Lumpur. You'll be able to get off most stops for at least 30 mins to an hour. We also had 5-10 min stops for photos at sites. I personally enjoyed the upper deck outside sitting area with fresh air during December. It was a good opportunity to see KL's skyscrapers and get familiar with the city with it's historic landmarks. This experience also proved to be a fantastic photo op!
The Hop On, Hop Off bus really is the best way to see KL city, which is quite spread out. But be warned : there always seems to be heavy traffic congestion so if you decide to sit outside on the open top deck, make sure you have a cap or hat handy to shade yourself from the searing heat, as you'll be sat in traffic for long periods of time. We had to keep going under the covered section of the top deck whilst sat in traffic as it was unbearable otherwise.
It probably takes around 2 hours to do the full tour & it's worth sitting on board at least once to do the full circuit before deciding where to hop off - if you can stand the heat, that is. The buses are reasonably regular - between every 15-20 minutes.
One complaint we do have is that one day, we waited for an hour in soaring heat - along with several other passengers - at the Merdeka bus stop, only to find out from the police sat nearby that double-decker buses wouldn't be stopping at that stop on that particular day because they were preparing for an event. At no point had anyone standing there waiting been advised of this - not on the bus, no staff waiting at that stop to divert customers etc. Very poor. The company's A frame was sat there on the pavement at the bus stop - why on earth didn't they use some common sense & courtesy & put a notice on it? It's a shame that clouded our judgement as this activity would have got full stars from us otherwise.
This was the worst hop on off bus tour I have been on. Very little commentary and was usually told of destination when bus was pulling away from stop so you didn't know if bus was just stuck in traffic or it was the stop you wanted to get off at. So actually missed getting to see what i wanted.
