The Istana is an older hotel and it shows. I kept asking staff what the strong smell was and was told: What smell? when I pressed they said : Oh some painting and renovation is going on! I stayed there three nights and the smell in the lobby area was unberable. Fortunately it did not smell in my room. The room was spacious but from a much older decor and era. It badly needs an upgrade. Perhaps that is what they are doing floor by floor?
I was there for a conference and the food services were average- nothing spectacular. The lobby bar is spacious bt dark and feels like a smoke filled room from the 60's. Drinks are expensive. So is a cup of coffe in that lobby bar. The breakfast area was adequate with a good selection of food. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is typical of older KL. One side has lots of new trendy clubs and nightlife activity you would expect to find in any big city!
Front desk staff and 'greeter' are a touch overzealous but polite and friendly. No free wifi in rooms-only in the lobby which is probably why the coffee there is so expensive. Business centre is not free. Everything is extra.
