When the General Manager of a Hotel personally responds to Trip Advisor reviews, it is ALWAYS a good sign.

KL has tens of excellent Five Star Hotels but we opted for the Sheration seeing that the GM, Stephan Sieberg was taking active interest in the feed-back from his guests and responding to most reviews which required a response.

My wife and I spent 3 glorious days (2 nights) at this sparkling property. Some of the highlights:

1) It certainly ain't skimping on staff ! There are always plenty of people to greet you, on arrival. They are attentive: open car doors, hail taxis, help with luggage etc.

2) Check-in was smooth, quick and cheery. Rachel showed us to our room which was an absolute delight. It was our anniversary and we were upgraded.

3) The quality of the room (Executive or Sheraton Club Room) was simply amazing. We spend at least 40 Hotel nights in Five Star Hotels, annually. This ranked with the best.

4) The choice of Breakfast on Level 1 is understandably far superior to what is on offer in the Executive Lounge. So, if you do have the choice, it is a no-brainer to head for the less exclusive facility on Level 1.

5) Faisal at the Concierge desk was amazing, & explained directions and dispensed advice on enquiry by my wife, which we found most helpful.

6) Don't just be going around in cabs. We used all forms of transport (despite the heat and humidity) - monorail, overground, Go KL buses (free), taxis and walked.

7) Just over a 200 metres walk from the Hotel are plenty of food choices. Jalan Doraisamy is the name of the street. Walk to the end and you will see many locals eating and clubbing.

Now, for a couple of minor brickbats:

1) Though cabs are cheap, if they follow the meter, KL has many shonky cabs. The staff at the Hotel should not just hail cabs without warning guests as to what to expect, what the trip might cost or just negotiating in good faith. We got ripped off on Day 1.

2) I made TWO local mobile phone calls of a minute each. Cost? $ US 3 each. If that is not ridiculous, it is outrageous.

We would certainly come back in a heartbeat. It is a most vibrant city. Malays are wonderful people. The food is sensational. Good value, too.

Shopping is diverse and eclectic. We just wish we had more time to explore for authentic, non-commercial batik!

Do not die without drinking sugar-cane juice (insist on fresh, without ice and juiced in front of you) or eating the world's most exotic fruit, the incomparable mangosteen.

We went for the club deal because it worked out just AU$10 or so more each day to what the cost of paying for breakfast would've worked out to.

The first night was noisy due to the thumping bass of the strip of discos (even though we were on the 38th floor). I was disappointed with this as I had requested a quiet room, and they're on the other side of the building. The next night we moved to a much better room on the quiet side which is also the side you see the Petronas towers from. For the noise sensitive, this side is essential. The club staff were very good about organising this for us.

The bathrooms are big and the walk in robe is great. The service was very good. Breakfast was fantastic and we preferred to go to the main buffet (rather than the club breakfast) because we loved the huge array of food, especially the excellent indian food for breakfast. Croissants were outstanding, although half the size would've been good.

We had dinner in the hotel's italian restaurant Villa Danieli and it was lovely. We didn't know what to expect but since the traffic is so bad, we decided to stay in and try it - turned out to be excellent and memorable. I had sea bass baked in salt in the wood fired oven, it was delicious. Really great service.

The location isn't that great if you're focused on the malls. But we loved walking around the hotel area and into some interesting market type areas - more of the real KL. We also had a driver - which I highly recommend as it took all the stress and sweat out of getting around. The butterfly park was lovely and Urut blind massage in Brickfields was incredible - blind therapists giving incredible massage and reflexology for a very cheap price. I had Mae who was a very lovely woman and incredibly skilled. A delightful experience and felt amazing afterwards.

Overall, the Sheraton is very nice, and although the rooms are a bit old, it is a stately luxury hotel and the service is great. Club is a great deal.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet side away from the strip of discos...the side facing the Petronas towers is the quiet side. If you're noise sensitive this is important.

Stayed at the Sheraton for 3 nights for pleasure in January. We thought the hotel was good value, nice, well appointed rooms and pleasant swimming pool. We explored KL by foot, monorail and train and really enjoyed the street food.

Room Tip: We paid extra for a Petronis Towers view room and it was worth it, big room, lovely view

Stayed here for business Feb 2013

-The hotel is very nice, with large rooms and bathrooms. No view to speak of unless you like looking at construction.

-Despite the fact that I was on a non smoking floor on my last night both my room and my hall stunk of cigarette smoke.

-The sounds of other bathrooms were quite loud, but didn't keep me from falling alseep.

-The location of the hotel was not ideal for me however. I ended up taking a lot more taxis because not much (anything) was walkable, and I was told it was not very safe to walk back to the hotel at night alone. Depending on price I would consider the Westin or Traders hotel next time for a better location. That being said, because it was more removed, I found it nice and quiet.

-The staff were excellent and very helpful.

Dear Tara,
Thank you for your compliments in regards to our excellent service and your valuable comments. regretfully it seems you have not been able to "wow" you mainly caused by small issues and location due to your potential business appointments. We assure you that we take your comments very serious and will discuss within the team on how to improve and avoid further shortcoming in our guest experience management.
With pleasure we noted that you still consider our Starwood sister Hotel The Westin KL as an option and would like to thank you for your loyalty.

I spent 6 nights in this well situated and luxurious hotel in Feburary 2014.The room was spacious well equipped and spotless. I had access to the club for breakfast and cocktails with a breathtaking view of the city. The service was impeccable and the restaurants in the hotel worth a detour.Truly this establishment was value for money and just a short taxi ride to the city centre.
A special thanks to Mr Tasa the doorman for his help with the taxis and his sense of good humour.
For my first trip to Kuala Lumpur this was an excellent beginning. Thanks to all the staff in the club for their efficient service.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms situated on the upper floors for stunning view of the city.
