Description: A contemporary tapas restaurant and bar in The Intermark, Ohla highlights the best of Spanish produce in a casual setting. The intimate 28-seater restaurant is stripped off all manner of snobbery and takes Spanish food to a level not yet seen in Kuala Lumpur, complemented by a curated Spanish wine list. The results of Ohla's success have been documented by acclaimed local food reviews, including a glowing five-star ode by Time Out Kuala Lumpur. The kitchen is led by Toni Valero of Barcelona, the dynamic 27-year-old on a mission to showcase the best of what Catalonia and Spain has to offer. With experience at El Celler De Can Roca and Mugaritz (San Pellegrino's number one and four restaurants in the world respectively), he brings a fresh eye and a deft hand to the kitchen. And proof is in his food.

My wife and I have been looking forward to sampling the dishes at Ohla for some time now but only made it to the restaurant last weekend. Ohla is located the the ground floor of the Intermark building facing the main Tun Razak road. You will need to enter from the front of the building as the only entrance is there.

Seats are limited and they are all bar stools either in front of the bar/chef counter or or to the side with a free standing counter. There are no tables. Unlike traditional tapas bars, you will have a chance to sit down to eat your tapas. However as Ohla gets more popular, I expect it will be standing room only.

The tapas dishes at Ohla are indeed unique, they are not your traditional tapas dishes. They are all prepared fresh to order to ensure quality. Portions are Goldilocks sized, just right. You will need to order a few dishes to share but go ahead, they are all marvelous. For our first visit, we tried the scallops wrapped in pork belly which came on a scallop shell, the mini lamb burger, the grilled octopus, roasted chicken cannelloni, foie gras with egg yolk and the black rice with sea cucumber. We also ordered a bottle of tempranillo to wash the food down.

What can I say about the skills of Senor Toni Valera, the chef at Ohla who expertly prepared and cooked the dishes to perfection. Simply it was one of the best meals we have enjoyed and mind you we have eaten in some really good restaurants. The taste is subtle with a balance of saltiness and sweetness all nuanced perfectly. There is a certain smokiness to the food, with the use of an oven with wood(?) fire that was used to cook the grilled octopus and the black rice. The sea cucumber (an internal part of it) was a special addition suggested by Chef Toni to replace the langoustines and what a marvel it was, crunchy and sweet and a joy to eat.

Service was good and the staff knew how to take care of us. Presently Ohla is open only for dinners and reservations are encouraged. Please check though for the latest mobile contact.
