YMCA Hostel
Reviewed 14 October 2013

Some reviewers may not like this one. However, YMCA Kuala Lumpur is indeed a guest house or inn, not a hotel. One should not have much expectations.
A double room cost RM110 per night. It is not high.
The hostel is located in an area that it is somewhat noisy. but if you close the window and switch on the a/c. It is still ok. It is also very close to KL Sentral. Very convenient to take LRT, KTM, airport shuttle bus.
The room itsefl is quite basic with TV, A/C, water boiler with glass and two soap. Guests should bring own toothpaste, shampoo,...
The hostel offers free set menu breakfast. It is not rich but basic. Guests should not order milk tea here if they don't like sweet drink. Sugar is added into the drink already.
In a word, it is a basic accommodation.

Room Tip: Guests of triple room can only use public washroom. No toilets are inside triple room.

We have been staying in this hostel for many years but unfortunately this trip was extremely uncomfortable due to bed bugs. The staff were helpful and shifted us to another room in the middle of the night but we noted blood on the linen and did not want to risk another attack so had to shift to a nearby hotel the next night.

Room Tip: check the bedding for blood

It's an ok facility strategically located close to klc central. Convenient to commute to and from the airport and a great get variety of restaurants around the hostel like Chinese, Indian and Malay.
It's a hostal, so chill with your fancy expectations . What you get is what you pay + something like a homemade breakfast. Rooms was OK, a bit nosy from outside until 11pm and early in the morning because it's a busy neighborhood. Hot water, soap and 5 TV channels, good speed wifi. The staff was 5*, super friendly and welcoming. Kudos to all of them keep it like that.

The hotel situated at strategy location and you can easily access to various public transport system in KL such as monorail, public buses (the main bus stop is just outside hotel) and KL Sentral where you can take LRT, ERL or shutter bus to go to LCCT.

I prefer the double room than triple room because triple room will be sharing toilet outside the room. The room rate is reasonable and environment is good.

Value for money.

It might be called a hostel, but the rooms here are pretty comfy - big double bed, good aircon and brilliant proximity to KL Sentral (which is why I booked it). All for about RM110. Oh, and breakfast was included.

Admittedly, it is designed in the common areas to be more functional than attractive, but once you're in your room it's all fine. The bathroom did unfortunately share that sentiment as well. No mini bar in the room - no alcohol consumption is permitted, but there are plenty of cheap restaurants nearby for dinner (and a beer if you're so inclined). Staff at check in were friendly, the guy on check out was a bit surly.

I'm giving it 4 stars because it was an unexpected surprise. KL Sentral is either top end or bottom end. Now I know there is a good standard right there too. (Oh, and if you're a couple (straight one would assume) you need to be married to share a room - check the YMCA rules on their website)

Room was cramped and spartan with TV reception that was reminiscent of a day in the snow.
No fridge and carpet beyond its use by date.
No external phone service and you are directed to the Public phone on the main road -1of which did not work and the other had difficulty in accepting money.
Not every traveller carries a mobile phone or has roaming.
Noise from the outside construction and late night restaurant business in the adjoining street was an issue too.
Cafe was expensive for the area!
Closely situated to Sentral railway station was perhaps it's one redeeming feature.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere!

My husband and i stayed in YMCA Kuala Lumpur from 31st May 2013 to 3rd June 2013 at there. really worth to the price, the staff is very friendly and helpful. we kept our luggage in the room while we go out and they were safe. rooms are clean and tidy + wash rooms. WIFI also worked without any interruption.

as it's situated very close to the (5 minutes walk) Central bus/train/LRT/Mono Rail station its very easy to access to any where you want. and it's situated in a peaceful place. only 10 minutes to KL city by Mono rail and 20 minutes to Batu caves by train and 1 1/2 hours to Genting Highlands by a cab, (as we could not catch the bus) you can take the bus also from the KL Central bus station.

food in the ground floor cafeteria was tasty and good affordable prices. the cafeteria staff also is very helpful and efficient.

i highly recommend this place if you really need to have a pleasant stay in Malaysia.

Room Tip: rooms in the right side get a good KL city view (Petronas towers/KL tower)
