Stayed at Traders for one night as the next day we were heading out to our island resort. The airport pickup was efficient and courteous. The checkin was smooth. The rooms are cozy and comfortable. The breakfast was elaborate but not really lavish. The staff is courteous and polite.
The point is, Traders is the best option Male city has to offer and should be opted for only while on the way to or back from the luxurious island resorts.

We had an overnight before and after our sailboat trip thru the Maldives and chose to stay at the Traders Hotel on both sides of the sailboat trip. Even though our sailboat was leaving from the airport island we are really glad we stayed in Male.

Yes, Male is dry but the hotel was first rate. Staff met us at the airport and we took the hotel's complimentary water taxi to the island. Checkin was smooth and we were allowed to check in early. Our room was wonderful and we even had a balcony for one of the stays.

The pool area was a great place to relax and we could see a good view of the airport island and watch the planes arriving and departing. We also took advantage of the massage.

The Hotel staff though was the best part of our experience. We had had a problem with our India visas and the staff was of eminence help in working with the Indian Consulate which just happened to be across the street. If it was not for the staffs help, we would have had to cancel the majority of our India trip. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty and we are truly grateful. Besides visa issue, the staff was great at giving directions, helpful hints, you name it.

The location of the hotel was great. You could walk to many restaurants and shops. One of our best finds was a diet ginger beer at a local restaurant (yes it's non-alcoholic) but boy was it tasty.

If you want a real beer or wine, head over to the airport island hotel for a nice dinner or drink. The water taxi is cheap and easy to catch.

Well, this is an interesting one… 1st the staff were phenomenally polite and helpful, they could not have gone out of their way to be more helpful, and can in no way be faulted. Since having been taken over Shangri-La it seems to have improved greatly, the restaurant on the roof is excellent, and the coffee shop in the lobby, however, it really needs to master the larger coffee!
Now, the downside, the cost! It is a total rip-off. I was over $300 for a room the size of a postcard, and a bathroom (which was very well appointed) taking up over 50% of the floor space. I was in double (with a splendidly comfortable bed), however, it was tiny and I have no idea how two people could have co-existed in there, for any longer than a stopover.
Finally $4.50 for a coffee in the lobby, $25 for breakfast, these are eye watering prices and by no stretch of the imagination represent any kind of value for money. I would give it 5* for staff and facilities but 2* for value – indeed it felt I was being ripped off… especially since they publicized the prices in the local currency and instantly when a bill was presented everything was converted in US dollars… for my convenience! Again, not the fault of the staff, rather more the underlying culture.

We stayed at Traders for one night on the way back from our holiday in one of the Maldivian resorts. We went to Male for one day because we wanted to see the capital, which is a questionable choice by itself, but I have a few things to say about Traders.

Traders seemed like a good place to stay, and it was given the choices you have in Male. The room was nice, quite small, but clean, with comfortable bed and good bathroom/shower.

My two problems with Traders were:

a) In the morning I woke up from a smell of an ashtray coming from AC. After a while, it mixes up with a smell of food from the canteen of the school across the street, so after one hour of trying to sleep with that air we had to leave the room and go for a walk as the smell was unbearable. By the time we came back, it was fine again.

b) We book the room through Booking.com, and on the check out had to pay almost 100 dollars extra of various taxes and service fees we were not informed about from the beginning. In the a night and a dinner at Traders came out more expensive as one extra day at our resort. I have to admit, spending one more night at the resort would have been more pleasant than spending a night at Traders in Male.

We spent a lot of time on the roof top at the pool, and had a dinner and lunch at Azur - the roof top restaurant. The food at Azur is very good - variety of seafood and meat dishes. More or less european prices. It it not possible to buy alcohol in Male (which a lot of people complain about), but Azur has plenty of delicious non-alcoholic alternatives. Service is slow, as a lot of other people pointed out.

The best part was the transfer from/to the airport. As a guest, you get picked up by a speed boat and then a car, so you avoid crowded boats and taxi hunt. Very efficient and convenient!

Overall, the stay was OK, although overpriced for what you get.

If you are considering this hotel for a sleepover - it's perfectly fine.

Room Tip: We paid extra for the ocean view, but I don't think it was worth it.

We stayed one night here as our flight arrived very late and it was half the price of staying in our resort for the first night when we would only be sleeping anyhow.

We chose this hotel as it seemed to be the best quality hotel in Male, being part of the Shangri La chain.

We booked the cheapest room quality and that was what we got. No surprises really as it was a stock standard hotel room although pricey for around $350
USD (more again for breakfast).

Nothing stood out as particularly special. The breakfast was a standard buffet, the gym and pool were small and the staff were mediocre. The porters however were very friendly and worked hard shipping passengers (literally) to and from the airport and docks.
