“Impressed by efficiency”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

My wife and I stayed for only one short overnight before our seaplane flight. We were picked up at the airport and whisked away to the ferry and then by car to the hotel. The pickup and the return to the airport was done with impressive efficiency. We were greeted by very friendly staff with a welcome drink and led to our room on one of the higher floors. The room was somewhat on the smaller side but perfectly comfortable. As we got in late and were leaving very early we didn't really get a good sense of what Male was about but it looked like a very compact city with narrow lanes but not really worth spending too much time in. The hotel is tucked away in one of the narrow lanes. Noise was not an issue for us. We didn't get to have breakfast as we left very early but we were offered a breakfast to go. This is a good option for an overnight.

Stayed for 3 nights on a business trip. Small but clean and well functioning hotel with very friendly staff. Located in the middle of Male, close to the main road. The transfers from- and to the airport were perfectly arranged. Elevator "bing" quite loud.

On my inbound leg, I stayed 2 nights at the Octave. This hotel is basic, inexpensive, clean and friendly. I missed the transfer because of baggage problems, but got on the phone, was given easy instructions to the water taxi (1/2 block easy walk from the airport baggage area) and taken to the hotel.
The rooms are basic and clean. Air conditioning worked well (the ceiling fan could have used some oil!) and the bed was comfortable. The reception staff is very helpful. You will hear street noise and call to prayer- but I put my earplugs in and had no big issues with noise. As a single woman traveling alone, they went out of their way to show me where things are and one of the guys even walked a few blocks with me to show me the right way to the waterfront.
Several local restaurants (great samosas right across the street!) around for take out (women don't generally eat alone in the local restaurants) and about 3-4 blocks to western style restaurants. Several small grocery and fruit stands within the one block area.
The front desk arranged a private snorkeling tour for me one morning (pick up by motor scooter, out to a private boat and an hour at a reef about 15 minutes away- fabulous! saw turtles sharks and rays).

On my outbound leg, I had a day room in Hulhulemale. The room was more modern, clean and about the same price as the Octave, but the problem with Hulhulemale is that there's nothing around there- its all tourist guest houses and no real in-country flavor. The beach is pretty, but women have to cover up (suggested minimum is to swim in a tee shirt and modest shorts over your swimsuit= as the sign says bikini wear is illegal!) Its actually faster to get into Male cite (via ferry) from the airport then it is to take a shuttle to Hulhulemale.

Stayed two nights to rest up after flying Vancouver, Beijing, Singapore,Male before we transferred to a resort. The rooms are set around a central staircase/elevator which made for a very noisy stay. We were picked up from our late night flight and transferred first by boat & then car to the hotel. There was an unexplained delay in leaving the airport which did not help after a long trip. The hotel is located on a rather narrow & dark street which had us staying in the hotel on the second night. Male is NOT a very welcoming city and we would if at all possible avoid staying there again when we next visit a Madives resort. The best part of our stay was the vast menu offered by the hotel. Transfer to the airport to catch our Trans Maldivian Twin Otter flight to the resort was another confused affair. We were unceremoniously dropped at the dock handed our boat ticket, no Thank You for staying at the Octave, have a pleasant remaining stay in the Maldives, nothing.

Room Tip: Try a top floor room to avoid the noise associated to foot falls and furniture being moved on hard s...

We were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the hotel. It is good enough for two or a three day stayover. The owners collected us from the airport and paid for the boat trip across to the main island. A car was waiting on Male main island to take us to the hotel. It was most appreciated. The hotel has 8 floors and the bedrooms are adequate and comfortable for a short stay. Location is good as its near the main road. We did not hear any noise from outside. Breakfast was simple and filling. The staff were extremely friendly and most helpful. On our departure we were transported back to the ferry and tickets were bought for us for the ride to the airport. Will definately stay there again

We stayed here on 12/12/13 for one night before our transfer to our resort.

We were met at Male airport and taken to a boat which was a short ride across to Male City, we were then taken to our hotel, didnt have to lift a finger, the airport greeter and driver sorted our luggage for us. They couldnt do enough for us, very helpfull and friendly!

Our room was comfortable and serviced our needs, there wasnt a hairdryer in the room but if you ask at the main reception they give you one to borrow.

The following morning breakfast was included which was nice... but as the previous reviewer said if you require more than one juice or coffee and then ask for water they dont seem willing to let you buy more, either that or they dont quite understand what we were asking for.

The transfer back to the airport island was seemless. Couldnt fault them and would stay there again.

We were looking for a hotel as an overnight stopover to our resort in the Maldives. Landing late at night, with a transfer to the resort not scheduled until the following morning, we were in search for a clean, reasonably priced overnight hotel. Hotel Octave fit this bill and comes recommended if you are looking for something similar.

Hotel Octave is relatively new (about 1 ½ years) located in the center of Male on a very narrow street and is slightly over a KM from the Male airport ferry.

Getting There: There is a ferry from the Male airport to Male island and is USD $1.00 per person. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the island. Taxis should be lined up at the ferry landing, and we would recommend that you take a taxi – although in theory, you could walk, it is a bit of a hike, and at night the roads can be a bit confusing. Less than 2 KM to the hotel, we recommend the taxi. Taxis are suppose to be a “flat rate” within the island of 20 Maldivian Rufiyaa which is (at current exchange rates) approximately USD $1.35. The “tourist” price that was asked of us including bags was 50 Maldivian Rufiyaa (or USD $4) – which the hotel staff was shocked by. On our return to Male airport to catch our flight to the resort, the hotel staff drove us to the ferry landing and purchased our ferry tickets – we are not 100% sure if this was part of our room rate or was a service that they provided.

Hotel Octave is a clean, simple, and relatively small hotel both in terms of number of rooms, and size of the room itself. Used as a layover hotel for the resorts of the Maldives, it is a good choice. Previously we had used the Kam Hotel in Male, and we would definitely not recommend Kam as an alternative. There are few choices of good, clean, and reasonably priced hotels in Male, especially for layovers. We booked the Hotel Octave for a very reasonable USD $108 for the night – about 1/3 of what it would be for Traders – another potential option on Male.

Our room was upgraded to a suite – something that you may want to consider booking for two reasons. One, it has more space than the normal room. Two, it has a small washing machine, and if you are coming into the Maldives in the middle of a trip – the ability to run a small load of laundry might be worth the extra cost of the Suite….it depends on you. The room itself is very clean, the bathroom is small but clean and functional, and the air conditioners were effective. We were on the seventh floor (I think the hotel is either 7 or 8 stories high) and we did not hear any street noise or anything from the outside. For an overnight “airport” hotel, this was just what we needed. One small comment – the bed we had creaked when you rolled over or moved around and it made noise – we mentioned it to the staff but am not sure what they might do about it.

The staff was very kind, and helpful….the internet worked well for us, albeit we had to switch connections because the password they gave us didn’t work. Breakfast is – extremely simple and I would suspect not on par with international expectations. One juice, four pieces of small toast, two hot dogs (I assume they were substitutes for sausage?) and a thin omelet. We didn’t see any fruit, and when asked for tea plus the juice, we were told that free breakfast was one or the other but not both. Suffice it to say, you won’t be staying here for the breakfast.

Not a lot of choices in Male for overnight hotels – you could go to Traders and pay a lot more, or we would suggest the Octave as a clean and simple alternative. We would not recommend Kam having stayed there previously.

Room Tip: If you need to do laundry - book the suite which had a small washing machine.
