On our departure from the Maldives we arrived at Malé airport slightly earlier than expected and had to wait before we could enter the departure lounge (they only currently allow people in 1 hour before their check-in to avoid over crowding in the small terminal).
There are not many choices of places to eat and drink at the moment. This is being addressed as the airport continues to be expanded. In the meantime, Aqua is a useful place to grab a drink or something simple to eat whilst waiting. The restaurant is at the end of the main corridor where the arrivals desks are - just walk outside the canopied area and you will see it on the right with outdoor seating available. It appeared to be open 24-hours. Inside is a simplistic self-service area with a selection of sandwiches and hot and cold snacks. There is also table service available outside. Naturally with it being on Malé there is no alchohol available.
One useful advantage is that they accept major credit and debit cards, and there appears to be no minimum purchase. Drinks are not the cheapest (but then you are in an international airport). We had a 500ml bottle of Evian and a strawberry smoothie (very nice) and this came to US$10.92 - they put credit card transactions through in US$ and you can also use these in banknotes to pay.
If you have any issues with your card being refused, ask them to try the transaction again. We had this problem and it just appeared to be their terminal not making the right connection initially.
