I stayed there a while ago on a business trip and I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were clean, the service was good, and it was relatively cheap. The location is decent as the hotel is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shopping venues. My biggest complaint is that the pool closes early. Otherwise, I would definitely stay there again.

The tropicana is only rated as a 3.5 star apartment hotel. It is a little aged but has all my wife I need when we stay in Manila. The apartments are all self-contained and as you are only a very short distance from the Robinson Mall (approx. 500m walk) it is easy to buy groceries and they will trolley them to the hotel for you. The staff are trully terrific with their wonderful manners and very freindly attitude. The pool is superp with it being 9ft deep at the deep end and you have a lifeguard on duty who will happily serve you drinks while you relax. There is also a well equiped gym and a suana which we always enjoy. They have good security and excellent room service. We have stayed there on several occassions and intend to stay there agian.

Room Tip: Book a double suite with a balcony. They are better equiped and you will have a view.

Two bedroom suite was basic and the decor was somewhat tired - could have used a refresh - but still was a decent place to get a nights sleep. Hotel staff advised us to exercise caution in the area at night, but it was not too bad and we did not feel unsafe. Reasonable value for money. All in all we felt the place was average/slightly above average, but would likely try somewhere else next time we are in town.

I Have stayed at the tropicana many ,many times as a single traveller and now as a family traveller and i can really call it my home away from home when in Manila. The front desk staff are really helpful at all times and the security men at the front door are also friendly and courteous. The apartments are very spacious with the seperate kitchennete and cleaned on a daily basis (only downside is they polish the floors and your feet get quite black if barefoot so you have to wear slippers )There is a restaurant next door that serves resonable food (was much better before they changed it to mr poons) and a minimart a few doors away if you desire a cold beer or three .Not far away is robinson mall for all the shopping you desire. All in All I rate the tropicana 10/10 for value and friendlyness and location

Room Tip: ninth floor is an extra flight of stairs as elevator only goes to eight floor and ask for a double b...

Large swimming pool (16m), perfect for swimming your laps. Not suitable for small children!
Wifi is not for free but if you stay a few days, and you ask about it, you might get a card for three hours for free. No breakfast room. Nearby restaurant Mr. Poon also serves breakfasts.
Rooms can be noisy around chrixtmas and new year, as they only have shutter windows. Hotel still breathes the grandeur of the late sixties with spacious corridors, suites and rooms. Gay friendly, guests are welcome but when alone, they can only get up after a verification call to your room.

While my studio (and the premises overall) looked a bit dated, it was quiet, spacious and overall good value for money. The hotel also has a reasonably well equipped gym. Staff are very friendly and competent.

Just two caveats: first, do not pay with a credit card at reception as, as highlighted by other travellers already, the exchange rate used is a total extortion and their bank seems to automatically convert the peso amount into your local currency at that rate. I complained but they blamed their bank; second, the streets surrounding the hotel can be dark and somewhat unsafe at night. Overall, however, most of Malate's streets are full of life with street vendors, bars, cafes, restaurants, and clubs, but do mind some dark street corners.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter

The Tropicana offers good accommodation for the price paid. The reception staff are helpful and the rooms are clean and tidy. We stayed in the 2 room apartments and whilst the bedrooms are air con the main living area wasn't. There are rooms which do have this so if staying you would need to ensure you request total air con. The air cons are window boxes and are a bit noisy however this is common in Manila if staying at budget price accommodation. The showers are fair and water pressure is a bit low. As in most hotels in Aisa double check what you have booked and if able get in writing as there was a mix up in rooms sizes as we had 3 rooms booked for all travelling and ended up with 2. Whilst this happened at midnight after a long day travelling they were very quick to get us another room which did require cleaning before we could go in. There is no restaurant but a little cafe which is ok next door. The hotel is in Ermita which is very busy, old and quite run down although there is Robinson shopping centre within close walking distance which offers many food outlets and good shopping. Their driver (Joel) is marvellous and very helpful. If on a budget a good place to stay however if you want better quality and location go to Makati.

Room Tip: Ask for room which has air con in living areas if staying in 2 bedroom apartments. They are on level...
