“Great hotel near Binondo Area and connected to LRT station”
Reviewed 9 June 2013

great hotel for the following reason: Big and quite room, comfortable bed, good hotel facilities (swimming pool, ballroom, gym) and restaurant. Building also connected to LRT/MRT station. makes going to my meeting easier, also close the Binondo Area / Lucky China Town Mall.

Room Tip: rooms without window are quieter and less/no sun light and they are cheap.

We stayed in this hotel last April 29-30, 2013. It was a good experience, there was just some minor slips.

We arrived early, we thought we could check-in early as well, but the receptionist told us that check-in time is 2:00pm so she ask us to just wait until, so we wait.

There's a restaurant inside the hotel, we stayed there to kill time. We ordered some desserts and drinks to freshen us up. The ambience is so nice, almost everything looks clean. So I was surprised when I saw an insect in my dessert, its like all my good impressions went away. The waiter politely changed my dessert, so yeah everything went back to being "fine". But it really was shocking.

Came 2:00pm, we asked for an empress room and it was gorgeous. The room is clean, everything's arranged so well. The ambience is cozy and relaxing, and the sheets are soft completely not itchy. The restroom is clean, no bad odors and stuff. It was comfy, so yeah, good impressions again. But when we used the bath tub, the water from the faucet was dirty. Not really as dirty, its just kind of blurry not really brownish. So we checked if the shower and the vanity sink has the same kind of water. Well thank God, its all clean. Only the tub has dirty water. So we just sticked to using the shower.

The location of the hotel is good, its near to almost everything. The pool area was also clean and not so crowded, the water is so clear. The breakfast was good, maybe average.

Overall, maybe I'll go back to this hotel soon. :)

I decided to stay in this hotel for the following reasons:

1) This hotel is not too far from the University of Santo Tomas, where I took my exams
2) Not too expensive. I got a Premier Room -No Window (with Breakfast-buffet) for only 1,700+ (Agoda promo [regular rate is 2,200]).
3) Near to Divisoria where you can shop for cheap goods like clothes, accessories and shoes.
4) It takes only 15 to 20 minutes from the airport if you will take a cab.
5) It is nearby the Doroteo Jose LRT station and other significant places in Manila (like Intramuros, National Museum, Luneta Park, Quiapo church and etc.).
6) It has a swimming pool though it's not really big. They have a sauna where you can relax after swimming.

The Location is really accessible. Though, you just have to be careful when you go outside of the hotel because the area is quite dangerous at night. The hotel staff are really warm and friendly. One of their male staff even helped me bring my baggages and accompanied me to the room (He is cute. LOL). They change the linens and clean the room everyday.

This place is really awesome for people like me who are on a shoestring budget.

P.S. They will ask you a deposit of 1,000 even though you have paid via credit card. Don't freak out. This is a safety deposit and they will return it to you upon checking out. LOL. ;)

Room Tip: Just dress down and keep your gadgets. The streets are crowded and snatchers are everywhere.

Part of our Manila trip was to buy supplies from Divisoria and meet clients at SM Megamall so we had to look for a hotel that is accessible to both location. Near LRT station which saved us time travel to SM Megamall and back (LRT-MRT).

Room was a bit small for a family of three but still ok. The room had a window overlooking the pool area. Complete with basic amenities and toiletries. Clean.

Food is great. We had sausages, fish fillets, cupcakes, and fresh fuits for breakfast.

Best of all is the courteous and hepful doorman/gurad.

Dropped in to Grand Opera and grabbed a room. Needed a rest from busy schedule and was feeling feverish. Rooms were a fair deal and clean. Coffee pot hot plate but hot water wasn't working well. Maintenance was at our door about 30 seconds after we called and fixed whatever needed fixing. Large windows in the room let me watch the day go by while I recuperated, Hotel was quiet and relaxed. I felt a lot better and had an evening snack of cappuccino and Tiramisu. The cake was excellent, as good as anything I had ever ordered in NYC and much better than anything in North Carolina.
The security also was more observant at this hotel than at other hotels I have been to. The breakfast buffet was better than average and had several options for Westerners and Eastern visitors.
Staff was pleasant and I would definitely use this hotel again.

This is a 3-star hotel and, contrary to its claim of having 5-star services, guests must not let their expectations go over the top.

I checked-in at this hotel for a brief staycation, and the choice of hotel was mainly from curiosity as well as the rates.

OBSERVATIONS:
- accessible from the train (LRT Yellow Line), although this causes some noise (train and road traffic) to filter in rooms facing the street.
- prompt check-in and check-out, i.e.less than five minutes. I did my reservation from the hotel website. Since I've been warned by other reviewers, the 1000-peso deposit did not surprise me.
- apparently secure. Guard at entrance checks bags; there's also a K9 posted nearby, presumably for guests coming in with lots of luggage. Within 10 meters of the hotel is a police detachment.
- above average food quality with Chinese, Filipino and International selections at reasonable prices. I ordered from room service menu, which is served by Circa restaurant; there's a mark-up compared with outside restaurants, but not that high. I was also asked to immediately settle food charges upon delivery of food in room instead of charging it against hotel bill.
- spacious room (I got an Emperor Suite, which has a separate living/dining room and bedroom. The bed was large and comfortable, two aircon units kept the room cool, two flat-screen tvs are available, separate toilet/shower/tub (with jacuzzi). Furnishings were average though: some were wobbly, some had their paints chipped, there were come stains in the upholstery. The gasket seal around the shower area door was loose in someplaces causing water to trickle outside of shower area. Between-room partitions made of wood, not cement, so tv noise from adjacent room can and does filter through (minimal though).

Take note:
1. The external environment may make some queasy, as there are vagrants loitering in the streets near the hotel. It is also not uncommon to find trash littering the street.
2. Hotel is far from airport.
3. Hotel has a Casino at the second floor. Elevators servicing guest floors shared with elevator servicing casino.

I was not able to sample buffet breakfast (dined from room) and hotel pool.

The Manila Grand Opera Hotel stands today on the former site of the Manila Grand Opera House, a cultural landmark that showcased Philippine arts from 1900 to the late 1950. Formally launched in August 2008, it combines the historic theater's cultural legacy with a boost to the travel and tourism industry as the only luxury hotel in Manila's Sta. Cruz district, near Binondo's Chinatown. Located on the corner of Rizal Avenue and Doroteo Jose Street, the Manila Grand Opera Hotel today caters to an increasing number of visitors from China and Taiwan, aside from habitues and residents of the area who have long hoped for such a center of elegance and beauty to emerge in their midst. At the hotel's entrance stands a historical marker about the inauguration of the first Philippine Assembly on Oct. 16, 1907 by United States Secretary of War William Howard Taft, a historic event that was held there. As the only elegant hotel in downtown Manila, Manila Grand Opera Hotel expects to cater to the increasing number of Chinese visitors from the mainland and Taiwan who will feel at home staying near Manila's Chinatown. The hotel also serves the needs of the Chinese community residing in the nearby Chinatown by providing accommodations for their relatives and friends coming from abroad, he added. The luxury hotel has 250 contemporary guest rooms equipped with state-of-the-art door lock system, cable TV and Wi-Fi and LAN access, a mini-bar with a wide variety of snacks and drinks, with amenities such as buffet breakfast, use of the Infinity swimming pool, and spa. For the dining enjoyment of guests, there are the New President Sharksfin Seafood Restaurant serving authentic Chinese cuisine and the Circa 1900 Bar and Restaurant offering an array of gastronomic delights in an old world ambiance created by the blown up photographs on the walls of artists who had performed at the old theater. For big social gatherings, the hotel's Ambassador's Hall can accommodate up to 1,000 guests while several Meeting Rooms are also available for smaller gatherings such as business meetings, social get-together, dining, meeting and banquets. ... more   less
