We were in Manila on an overnight stop on our cruise ship so our time was extremely limited - hence we planned well in advance to make the most of our time
The very first thing we noticed about Yolo Travel was the quality of their website and then the speed of response and detailed and courteous replies to our emailed questions
We decided to book a private tour - just 2 of us - to the Taal Volcano in Tagaytay
RJ, the guide assigned to us by Yolo was waiting at the cruise port for us - on time, with our names on a sign and ready to go. We got into a very nice vehicle - the 4x4 type - clean, air conditioned and comfortable - I liked the little touch of the neck pillows
It was a long drive to the Taal Volcano - almost 2 hours, and the driver (not RJ) was calm, courteous and confidently and calmly drove us through the manila traffic
RJ gave us some history and back ground on the Philippines as we drove and when we were almost at the volcano he stopped at a local market where we tried some of the local snacks - RJ paid - like deep fried bananas on a stick.
From there we drove to the lake outside the Taal Volcano and we boarded a small boat which took us across to the outer edge of the Taal Volcano - its quite complicated as its a volcano in a lake in a volcano in a lake - well a caldera actually - you can read up on it for more details
We crossed the lake and our boat man and a young man with two horse accompanied RJ and ourselves up the mountain - the horses were there in case we needed help/ had had enough of walking etc
Well...I consider myself pretty fit and healthy, but this 12km walk (there and back) in 40 degree heat was quite something!!! We stopped a lot on the way for water and catch your breath breaks. There is not a lot of shade - maybe 60% of the route is shaded. I wore a very large hat and draped a cotton sarong over it to create more shade. Ideally you need to climb the volcano very early in the day so you are back before the heat gets intense, but we were limited by the arrival time of our cruise ship
We reached the top of the mountain leading down to the inner lake or caldera of the smallest volcano in the world, and apparently most active and then we descended to the inner lake. Once there we swam in the sulphur waters for about 30 minutes - amazing.
Not once did RJ pressure us to move on or hurry up
After the long walk back we were met with lunch prepared for us of local foods - fish and salads - very nice
We drove back to Manila exhausted and exhilarated after a wonderful day
We gave RJ a tip as he was really a most outstanding young man and he wanted to give it back to us as he felt it was too much (it wasn't). Such humility and grace was something we saw everywhere in the Philippines - what a wonderful nation - we will surely be back
Should you plane to visit the Philippines, do look up Yolo Travel - they have many tours on offer for many different budgets and they really are most excellent
