“The most relaxing holiday - we could not have asked for more”
Reviewed 31 May 2010

My new husband and I stayed at the hotel for 10 days and were extremely impressed with every aspect of the place. The owners, Gary and Rory, welcomed us in to the fold and we were treated like family for the whole time we were there, which made us feel really relaxed and comfortable. The other staff were very friendly and professional and really added to the holiday as well, as did all of the lovely adopted cats and dogs.
The hotel is set back a bit from Bodrum town centre, which makes it feel like a retreat from the busy resort, which gets going in the middle of May. The hotel is beautiful, inside and out (the photos only tell half the story). The rooms are kept absolutely spotless and are decorated very tastefully. The pool, bar and garden area have been so well thought out that you can really get whatever you want out of the hotel - whether you want to have a very private and quiet time, or spend time with others and have a laugh around the bar (or a bit of both).
Breakfast is served at very civilised times outside, overlooking the sea, and is very healthy. There is a menu available for lunch and dinner which is really handy when you would rather lounge around the hotel, and there is a bar next to the pool which offers very reasonably priced drinks - this is where we spent most of our evenings!
As you can see from our ratings for the hotel, we had a brilliant time and it wouldn't have been possible without our hosts, who made a real effort to make our stay enjoyable. It was a most entertaining and relaxing holiday and we couldn't have asked for more!

Like others have mentioned, Gary and Rory, along with Mamoud, make this stay unforgettable. Of course the rooms are modern and clean (really really clean!) and the views over the sea are amazing, especially during sunset. But it's the friendliness and charm of the hosts who make it feel as though you are visiting distant relatives or old friends as opposed to staying at a hotel.

Anything we asked, Gary and Rory were able to assist with including renting us a car for a drive to Ephesus, explaining the easy directions to us 17 times, and even helping us with a quick instruction of the manual transmission. The restaurant recommendations are spot on. If Gary and Rory say the food is delicious, expect spectacular....if they say it's affordable, expect an abundance of food at an exceptionally low price. We felt very sad to leave and hope that we can make it back sometime before our lives are over. hah I think the animals were sad to see us go too....they tried to follow us into our cab!!! (which Gary and Rory arranged for us at a hugely discounted rate,)

The hotel itself is cozy with little nooks and crannies here and there, where you can sip a beer or sun for the afternoon. Everywhere you turn, you notice something new and picture worthy. The one thing about Bodrum as a whole is that you can't flush toilet paper...don't blame the Aegean Gate! Blame the old plumbing system.

Don't miss breakfast on the terrace. It's excellent and quite filling!

Definitely stay at this hidden gem! It's an unforgettable stay.

We found the Aegean Gate through TripAdvisor . This is a true gem of a hotel. The location is away from the noise of the town, tucked up a quiet side road, but when you go through the ornate gates you suddenly find yourself in the most amazingly serene place with fantastic views. Everything is spotlessly clean, the rooms are first rate (the pictures don’t do justice) with aircon, a fridge, and a TV in the lounge and the bedrooms being north facing are cooler with great quality beds; we slept better than at home. As other guests have said, what makes this place uniquely special are the delightful owners, Gary and Rory. They give everyone a warm and relaxed welcome, and they go out of their way to help guests to have the best possible experience. Because the hotel has only six rooms you can also quickly get chatting to other guests over breakfast or by the bar and we met some lovely, interesting people and had a lot of fun chatting over a beer. If you want some space you can just take some quality quiet time in the chill-out area overlooking the Aegean sunset, or by the pool. If you’re a bit tired after seeing the sites and don’t want to go back out in the evening you can also order food to be delivered from a local restaurant and we did this several times as it was delicious and excellent value. As well as running the hotel, Rory and Gary somehow find time to give a lot of care for local animals that need help. In the hotel you will find two of the nicest dogs you could wish to meet; Grandad and Samson. If you’re not really a doggie person, don’t let this put you off though as they are exceptionally well-behaved and spend most of the time dozing! We found our Aegean Gate Hotel visit to be a really memorable experience; great value and highly recommended. Robert / Kevin.

Never were a set of reviews so accurate.

We had just the best time at Aegean Gate. Never before have I had a holiday
that was full of relation, fun, laughter and an insight into the trials and
tribulations of expatriation.

The hotel is so intimate that over breakfast you will find yourself chatting
the fellow guests and share travel stories and experiences as they come and go
through the hotel (we were there for a straight week). Likewise as the sun goes
down, you will find yourself having a pre-dinner drink at the pool bar and
reenforcing that friendship. Despite the charming intimacy of the hotel, you
also feel that you have your space and privacy in the hotel as required.

The hotel's location is perfect, away from the summer noise of downtown Bodrum
but close enough to stroll to the centre along the coastline or take a taxi for 8 lira.

This is the perfect place if you fancy taking a few days out to enjoy a late
breakfast, unwind by the pool - there is plenty of choice of sun beds in or out
of the shade, take lunch (they have an excellent delivery service of good

quality turkish fare) and sleep in the afternoon.

Gary and Rory are naturally genuine, welcoming and helpful hosts and have a
story or two about their experiences in Turkey.

To add to the charm are their two dogs, Samson and Grand-dad (who we miss more
that Gary and Rory) as well as a small host of cats all of whom have been
rescued from the street and blend charmingly into the furniture. Gary and Rory do a great deal for the welfare of local street animals which would otherwise be left to fend for themselves. If you do find yourself with some left over lira at the end of your stay then it would be put to great use.

For us the choice of rooms is irrelevant, the upper rooms have the view, but
the lower rooms have ease of access to and from the pool and bar.

Looking forward to the next visit ...

We had missed our connections and were very late getting into Bodrum. By the time we arrived, it was late and we had resigned ourselves to either fighting into a noisy, crowded club or going without supper. Gary drove us down the hill, introduced us to the owner of a wonderful, quiet restaurant on the water and made sure that the restaurant owner would drive us back up the hill. I don't know how you could top that. Breakfast on the patio is leisurely and quiet, all of the rooms have a balcony with a view of the bay, and it is a short walk down the hill to catch a 5 minute ride into the heart of Bodrum. They gave us very helpful advice and recommendations for places to go (and not go) which saved us much time and aggravation. The icing on the cake was that my wife does dog rescue so the fit was total and complete.

What makes this place so special is not the incomparable views, the impeccable comfortable and spotless rooms, tasteful decor, fabulous swimming pool, delicious breakfast but the care and attention that the two owners bestow on their guests. They go out of their way to make your stay a complete success.
Thank you Gary and Rory. We miss you and all your rescued animals.
