“2014 break in turkey hotel ambrosia”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

Carl latham and family
Our stay here was due to the hotel we were supposed to be in (summer garden apartments ) being closed.
What can I say about hotel ambrosia,?
The manager joy was the first person I spoke to after my mishap she was very welcoming and kind and listened to my worries, which she took time to then arranged for me and my family to stay with them while she took care of arrangements with on the beach, this was done without any fuss I have to say if you have any problems and joys on the case no doubt it will be taken care of what a really nice person,
the bar staff and waiters were amazing and a class act that made our stay there all the better you could have a laugh with them and they with you, 4 staff in particular deserve a special mention (metin,(text) halil, cengiz.and Richard (gir ) all spoke great English and you got the feeling they enjoyed there jobs and while still maintaining there professionalism and doing what they should took the time to make you feel at home and very well looked after,
Darren and lutfu the entertainment staff were something else and we manage to spend almost every night inside the hotel singing along with the entertainment top job guys loved what you did,
we will be back and cant recommend this place enough thanks for everything over our stay

Room Tip: All rooms were great clean and nice if you sleep light avoid pool side rooms

Superb location right on the (gravel) beach.

Sadly, the hotel lets itself down by mediocre quality of the food and poorly trained staff - i.e. when ordering food or drinks around the pool, it took up to an hour for the order (cold drinks) to arrive!

Self serf-service cooked food in the restaurant was often lukewarm or cold - this is a potential health hazard.

Rooms were OK - comfortable - but when we arrived after midnight we were given a room on the ground floor overlooking the road and the children's playground - we had requested an upstairs room! To be fair, Joy the Hotel Manager changed our room when we told her of this, the following morning - a big thank you to her for this!

Some of the Health & Safety aspects at the hotel could be improved - i.e. no warning signs on wet marble stairs after cleaners have washed them!

Despite our criticisms we enjoyed our holiday and would recommend the hotel, although it would be improved by attention to the comments above.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the pool - sea view rooms can be noisy - while we were staying the hotel h...

Best holiday we have had in a long time!

The weather, location, hotel and the locals all exceeded well above our pre-conceived expectations. In particular, the TUI travel rep Harneel Cheema did an amazing job in keeping us informed of the local area, advice on excursions, as well as his friendly and approachable manner. We will definitely be returning next year!

Arrived 5th may 2014 for 14 days beware hotel still in process of opening up hotel itself good 4 stars staff 5 stars ;metin , richard, halil couldnt do enough to look after us great service
2 stars for food booked half board expect to get at minimum a descent buffet breakfast and dinner
Bad arrangement with steak house restaurant that they have a la carte menu if willing to pay extra food much better whats the point in half board in having to pay for descent food
Would suggest go b/b plenty of restaurants to get great food shame food issue spoilt a good holiday
Hotel clean good standard also be careful hotel has functions weddings etc which take over hotel asking quests to leave pool area as getting used for functions staff too busy with functions to bother about paying quests
Sum up not 4 star as quality or selection of food not good enough will not be returning to this hotel

Stayed at this hotel a couple of weeks ago and found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. Maybe some of this was due to being pre season and them getting ready for things to really start e.g. Hammering and banging noises next door and the dining area and lounge bar drinks upping and moving overnight to a new location. In many ways the Ambrosia has got 4 star facilities but definitely not 4 star execution.

The good points: perfect location - right on the beach (and if you turn right at the beach exit you get straight onto the shortish strip of restaurants/shops/excursion sellers/money changers).

A bus stop right outside where a mini bus will take you to Bodrum for 3.5 TL per person

The poolside was pretty nice (empty for the first half of our holiday). I reckon in peak season it will fill up but they do have quite big grounds to sit and lounge about on and a nice beach area with loungers.

I enjoyed getting a turkish shave from the barbers. Probably could have got one cheaper outside of the hotel though in all fairness it was a reasonable price and the guy seemed good at what he was doing. Pretty cool. Shame the stubble has now grown over it all now.

The gym looked decent but didn’t test it out.

The spa area looked really good. My big regret was getting a Hamman from the rep that accosted us on our first morning and not going to the hotel spa instead. The spa we went to in Gumbet, we walked out on mid way through despite paying about 100+ TL extra for massages (a conveyor belt of tourists being herded about by a gaggle of young men who just sort of made you wait about in towels in various locations while they all chilled and smoked). By contrast the spa manager of the hotel showed us around the hotel spa and it looked so much better than the place we had been to. I felt a bit sorry for him as Im sure he had the much superior product but the reps were signing people up and veering them away. Kept meaning to try them out but just ran out of time.

The medium points: the staff. Not really a bad point as they have quite a lot of staff and they all seemed to try hard but it just didnt seem like a slick organisation of staff. Very few spoke good English which at times made things clunky. I think the receptionist we liked most was called Sonja as she spoke good english, was actually smiley, really helpful and friendly. The majority of the food and bar staff didnt speak great english and although they never looked the happiest they did work hard. Special thanks to the balding staff member who went out of his way to get us some turkish tea which weirdly wasn't on the menu. Turkish tea rocks.

The bad points: Noise - maybe it was the location of our room or the design of the hotel acoustically but sound travelled to our room. Whether it was laughing from the lobby bar (damn late night happy people); clattering of the pool balls (slight bugbear is pool tables without room to cue properly and rubbish cues); Hearing our neighbours tv at 1.30/2.30 am clearly in our room and every flush of their toilet and every drop of water from their shower, footsteps echoing from the corridor and chatter; building work in the morning (maybe a plus point if you love the sound of hammering and clanging). Noise was bad in our room. Never really noticed noise in any other hotel ive stayed at (I dont have the best hearing).

Our room - we flew in pretty late and once we got into our room (118) we were a bit underwhelmed with it. It didnt seem that bad but it didnt seem that good and if you really looked from the balcony you could just about see enough plant life to just about be classed as a garden view. I dont know if the location of the room contributed to our noise reception (definitely did in terms of them building something next to us but not sure how other rooms were with noise) Anyway we did think about complaining on our first proper day to see if we could change room but really we wanted to get on with the hard work of holidaying and couldn't be bothered with any hassle.

The food - we were on half board but ended up only having a couple of breakfasts and dinners. The food was fine if you wanted calories and wanted to survive but for us it wasnt really an enjoyable buffet but you could definitely find something there to survive off. They did have a pretty good salad section though which was a life saver. Out of all the wonderful food we had on our hols none of it came from the hotel. Some really nice restaurants in Bitez and Bodrum to try out and pretty good prices. For those on a tight budget or with families to feed im sure the hotel food would be sufficient. Plus maybe the standard/variety of food is related to the season not quite starting and it will be much better during the season.

The coffee - With no kettle in the rooms we struggled to get one cup of good coffee at the hotel and believe me I tried enough times. Every cup was a different shade of not good and at 5 or 6 lira a pop (plus tips) it made more sense for us to just go to a restaurant down the beach to get a good cuppa.

Weird point - they seemed to randomly lock some of the glass doors on occassion and with no signs we did spend more time than we would like trying doors that were open before but had suddenly become locked. This really puzzled us and it seemed to puzzle a few others too!

Overall - had a really good holiday and the Ambrosia on balance was pretty good. I think our main issue was it seems to project more than it delivers - Im a believer of underpromise and overdeliver but the Ambrosia takes the opposite tact. Kind of frustrating as it seems like it has the pieces to be a really good hotel and just doesn’t live up to that.

Bitez is really really lovely though with great views, good food and lovely people (less hasslely than other places we have been and strangely they are all named like characters from a british gangster movie - happy gino, fast eddie, curly...) and the hotel is in a perfect location to enjoy both Bitez and Bodrum. Would we return to Bitez? Definitely, Would we return to the Ambrosia? Probably not. Not because it is terrible but I guess for us the food was an issue and maybe we would be better off in an apartment. I would recommend it though and Im sure everyone who stays there will have a reall good holiday.

Other Tips
If you get the honour of a rep trying to sell you all and sundry on your first day before you have had time to check things out then try and fend them off. On the strip there were a couple of trip sellers and although we didnt book anything through them we found the guys at the one near the hotel really helpful with advice. (no hard sell just friendly laid back guys who told us where to get good fakes in Bodrum and prepped us on the art of the haggle). Think they were called Otan tours. They also had the best exchange rate we found (3.475 compared to the hotel offering 3.3 which made a difference on a few hundred quid). Restaurants we liked were Lavaz and Seaside but I think all the restaurants seemed pretty good.

Returned yesterday from an excellent holiday in the Ambrosia Hotel with my friends. Lovely hotel in a great location on the beach - gets busy in the summer but nice this time of year as you feel you have special attention. Good food, entertainment and a beautiful spa. We had a treatment consisting of sauna, dip in plunge pool, Jacuzzi, full body Turkish bath, mud facial and a full body massage - all for around £25 - very relaxing.
I had a light bulb out in my room and a problem with my shower head. I reported these to Joy the manager who had them fixed within 10 minutes and was wonderful, friendly and helpful.
My thanks also go to my special friend Richard, the restaurant manager x

I stayed at Ambrosia in April and had booked to stay for 4 nights, but ended up staying 9 nights as loved it so much. I stayed here 3 years ago and had loved it then that when I was looking to go back to Bodrum, on my own, it was my first choice for a relaxing holiday. It was a real home from home without having to do the chores!! Excellent value for money too!
The hotel, staff, rooms, spa and the serenity of the beautiful view were all excellent. Thank you for looking after me so well. I'll be back September hopefully.
