Royal Asarlik Beach
Ranked #5 of 101 Hotels in Gumbet
Reviewed 14 November 2009

We stayed at this hotel for a week from 19 Oct 09. This was our first visit to Turkey and we loved it. The hotel was just perfect for a relaxing weeks break. Our room was on the 2nd floor. Not much of a view only plants and water features but it was so quiet. The restuarant was on the 6th floor and I would think a room near that could be noisy in the mornings possibly.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. Even checking in was a pleasurable experience as we were met by a cool drink and a man to carry our bags. To be honest we didn't venture out of the hotel complex too much. Gumbet itself was great if you like browsing shops and it had plenty of bars & eating places. We did do an all day boat trip which we booked from the man on our beach who also ran the water sports hire too. Great day out. Try it if you can.

The hotel had numerous bars. We favoured the Green bar of an evening and we met so many great people on this holiday and most of them congregated at the bar at some point during the evening too. The main barman there Hasan was brilliant. A top notch barman. This was open until midnight but then you could move on to the 24 hour Marine bar if you wished.

We enjoyed most days just lazing by the beach which had it's own Havana beach bar too. From your lounger to the sea was only a few feet and when you fancied a spot of lunch you could just go up to the main restuarant or there was good food being served nearby to the other bars too.

I would describe the food in the main restuarant as good. Plenty of salad choices and there were chefs in the evenings preparing different dishes for you to try .Dress code was anything goes really. Some people dressed up and others were still in swim shorts & tshirts but it was so relaxed it didin't matter.

We didn't really see much of the evening entertainment as it's not our thing. What was on was always advertised in the lifts. One night I remember there was a rubber man on who could get himself inside a suitcase or something and they also had a Turkish night which was good apparently.

We didn't use the pools available as we loved the beach but they looked great. There were always plenty of loungers available and although some were reserved in the mornings this didn't appear to cause a problem. Maybe it could be worse in the high season I suppose.

We have already booked to go back next September as we enjoyed it here so much. Don't go thinking this is the same as 4 star in Europe and you'll love it. Don't be afraid to haggle either. Even the taxi drivers expect it and we had a great deal on a taxi back to the airport. We took too many Turkish Lira as they really wanted our pound or the Euro but we know for next time.

Give this hotel a try and have a great holiday. We did.

Loved this hotel!!

My husband and i both thought it was great. Everything was so clean!

The staff were so friendly and really helpful.

Food was also really nice, also the all inclusive beer was good which makes a nice change fom other places we have been!

The thing that will stick in my mind though is how lovely the hotel rooms smelt, such a fresh clean smell, dont know what they use to clean but i want some for my house. The beach towels also smelt clean and fresh every day, no stains on them at all!

We have booked again for June 2010, counting the days down already!!!!

We were at this hotel from 12 – 19 October. We had previously been twice to super all inclusive across at Antalya but had changed to Bodrum because of the day flight from Glasgow.
Self and wife (53) and mother in law (77)
While the others we had been at were of a very high standard the staff at the Asarlik surpassed all of the others.
The hotel did not have exactly the same level of service as we had found elsewhere – eg swift setting and clearing of tables and the level of table service but although the staff in the other hotels may have been ahead in terms of cold efficiency the staff at the Asarlik win out with the levels of their friendly and personal service.
The food we found to be of a very high standard indeed. Turkish food, but hey that’s why we came here – is it not? Any who moaned about the food would be well served by going to Benidorm – and that’s where they should go.
The breakfast on the rooftop restaurant was extensive and each day there were fresh omelette, eggs or pancakes being cooked right there.
Coffee and juice come out of machines – the coffee is Nescafe and suits most and there is a range of different juices – I did not like the orange but the apple was good. There are plenty of others.
If you miss breakfast you will not have long to wait because at 11am food is being set up at the restaurant next to the quiet pool and green bar. This food goes on up to 5pm. I thought the food here was ok but the hotel had better to offer elsewhere.
Lunch at the Marine bar was a bit different but the big attraction there is the kebab being freshly cooked. Not the dog food British version but real meat (chicken) on the spit.
At 5pm you will get afternoon tea at either of the poolside bars.
You can make you way up to the rooftop and enjoy a break from the sun and a full choice of delicious food. We were so impressed with the main restaurant that we did not try the a la carte. The best and very busy night was the Turkish themed night (Thursday) – do not miss this one. The food is even more Turkish on that night, there was a great Turkish show and best of all was the waiters with their dancing – don’t leave at the end of the show!!. There was also a raffle E10 where if you win you need to be taken to a gold / silver centre the next day to pick up what you win. Not really a con as everybody can see through it – each table seemed to have one winning ticket.
The bars served Turkish drink which varied. Efes beer is neither sweet, hoppy, weak, fizzy nor flat – it is a beer that everybody will drink and is really refreshing. The wine I thought – white a little harsh, rose a little better and red good – just have a few of any of these and all will be well. Spirits often found a home within cocktails but those drinking vodka and coke did not complain and the whisky was Long John and I was surprised at the number of people drinking whisky in any case. The copy of Baileys got good reports – in fact the hotel changed the one they were using and got some complaints, they simply took it out of the hotel and changed back the next day. They also had Malibu.
The bar staff are great in all of the bars and work hard. Do not shout at them and your drinks will flow with great speed and regularity.
The lobby bar was ok but the other hotels we have been in were way above what this hotel has. It is ok for a drink, tea or coffee on entering or leaving the hotel but would not choose to settle down for a period of time.
We used the green bar both during the day and in the evening. The rooftop bar at the restaurant is spectacular, the one at the main pool ok but we did not use. All these plus the Lobby bar closes at midnight. The Marine bar was 24 hours and we often went round after midnight. However the loud music continued to 1am and then ceased. At midnight a sandwich buffet was opened at the Marine bar and was ok but basic.
Rooms were spacious and clean and well serviced. We were in the main part of the hotel above reception. There are superior room but you would be out on a slope going from the hotel down to the beach. Reception, housekeeping and management staff were A1.
There is a show each night in the amphitheatre but these were mixed. The circus and rubber man were unbelievable but I would give Mr and Mrs, bingo and the like a miss.
My wife and mother in law booked a Turkish bath and massage etc with forget me not travel from outside the hotel. They were sent to a place that was part of another hotel closed for the season and it was not the experienced they had hoped for.
We took a dolmus to the Oasis shopping centre. It does have designer shops but was not that busy. You get the dolmus on the main road (do not cross the main road or you will get it the wrong way)as you walk out of the hotel go left. Get on pay your 2.20 lira and just say Oasis. The driver with call you up to get off the bus, cross the street and go through any lane you see on the other side you will then see the centre across a dual carriage way – take care.
I went into Bodrum on the same bus. When you get to the bus station there are hundreds of these mini buses. However they are all different colours identifying where they go – Gumbet is green with white trim on the bottom of the bus – nobody could go wrong. I walked straight down to the harbour and the labyrinth of shops. You get no advantage over shopping in Gumbet.
Did find shopkeepers doing the hard sell but all in the people are top class.
Being all inclusive and with the quality of Turkish food on offer we did not eat out. I went to to the Temple bar to watch football and the beer was about 1 pound 80 / pint but I did see it at 1 pound 30 but suspect that prices change as the time of the day goes on.
Shopping was ok but the usual ridiculous price is initially put to you – about half is what to aim for if you are buying something you are offered a price of 80 lira plus and perhaps you would pay more than half relating to the initial offer on cheaper things.
Internet is cheap out of the hotel – you should get it for 1 lira for 30 min.
A turkish shave for the men (and any woman who wants to feel equal) is a must. I had a hair cut at the same time - about 8 pounds all in.
Gumbet was fine for us in October but the place must be very bust not to say hot in the season.
The hotel is well placed at the end of the bay and it only takes you 5 min to walk into the busy bit of the resort.
Bodrum airport. The worst place I have ever been in. Expensive and not good. We had taken self sealing food bags with us and had food from the hotel for our journey. I brought water through the airport, as many people seemed to do but cannot advise this as it is out with the rules.
The Royal Asarlik is the place to be if you want a Turkish experience where you are looked after by the friendliest, well trained and professional staff. You will find other hotels with the full 100% efficiency but they will not have that touch that treats you as an individual guest well cared for at a very personal level.
Do not often go back to the same place and do not often recommend no matter how good. Would do both with this hotel.

We have just come back from the hotel having previously stayed there in May. On our first visit to the hotel we couldn't believe the Marine Bar was 24 hours, definately perked us up on our late flight from the UK!!

We would not hesitate in recommending this hotel as on both occasions we have found it to be of top class quality in a great location, literally a stone's throw from the beach. All the staff right through from reception, poolside bar, Havana Beach Bar, Marine Bar and the roof top restaurant are very friendly, efficient and nothing is ever too much trouble. The Marine Bar staff recognised us from our first visit which was excellent to know as a lot of holiday makers would have stayed there between May and October. They even asked us where our other friend was, sadly she couldn't make our recent holiday, such is their friendliness.

There is a vast amount of food in the roof top restaurant so even fussy eaters like me are well catered for. All the staff there are very good but two waiters to look out for are Zeynel and Fevsi, if you happen to come across these two young men you will be in great company, both are a credit to the hotel in terms of their service, friendliness and cheery attitudes. Watch out for the Turkish night as all the waiters get up to dance after the acts have finished, very enjoyable and funny to watch as they all really go for it!

Me and my friends are returning to the hotel in May 2010 for a special birthday and we are all looking forward to it. Also, we have decided to stay at the hotel once a year after that which shows how highly we rate it.

Everything was excellent apart from 2 things one being the alarcarte food not very good and the other was the evening entertainment could have been more interesting and noy soo late. Hotel and staff very good, food great too ,put on several pounds when we got home. The accomodation was excellent and had lovely views of the sea.
Lots of steps but that kept us fit. Unforunately it rained 2 days but we got out and about.

After reading all the positive reviews, we were disappointed by this hotel. It is clean and we were lucky to have a nice room, but the area it is situated is very run-down. This may have been worse because the season was ending and some places had already closed down. The beach is just a narrow strip of shingle/sand and there was quite a lot of litter about. The food in the hotel was okay, but repetitive. As it was end of season, only one restaurant was used for a la carte dining, serving Chinese food one night etc. The food tasted very similar to the food on offer in the buffet restaurant and the Chinese food did not taste Chinese at all. The service was rushed, the waiters couldn't get you out of there quick enough and some of them were only pleasant if you were purchasing extras such as bottles of wine. The snack service in the hotel is extremely poor and not very hygienic at times. Ice cream and pure fruit juice were charged for, which could be expensive if you have a number of children. On a positive note, some of the waiters (particularly those in the Panorama Restaurant) were friendly and helpful and seemed to enjoy their work, some even providing entertainment of their own. Our room was bright and airy and kept spotlessly clean. Both the bedroom and bathroom had modern fitments, but they could do with changing the lumpy mattresses. As with most areas in Turkey, you can feel pressurised by shop owners etc. but most of them were pleasant enough. Overall, we had a fairly relaxing holiday, but would not go back to Gumbet, and although the hotel is clean, provides reasonable food etc. I would rate it closer to 3-star than 5.
