“Worth a long detour and glad we did”
Review of North Carolina Zoo

We stayed in Winston-Salem so the NC Zoo was at least an hour's drive away, and we were very glad we made the trip to see this wonderful place. Billed as the world's largest natural habitat zoo, the animals, especially the elephants, giraffes and various antelopes had very large spaces to roam in. The rhinos appeared to be close to a mile away from where we saw them, and the zoo has only a few of each species so they are not at all crowded. Puffins and otters are always a treat to watch, and this was no exception.

The zoo is set up on a straight line with parking and entrances at each end, and there is free tram or shuttle service between each end. Even though we visited on the Fourth of July, there was no wait at all for the bus service. Very well designed zoo with plenty of drinking fountains, restrooms, and benches scattered all along the route, and we easily spent the entire day there. Beautiful layout with lots of attractive and interesting planting, and lots of sculpture along the route as well, some large enough for kids to climb on. The employees and volunteers we met were all very helpful and informative -- all together it made for a great day.

We enjoyed our visit to the zoo. Great exhibits. the only reason it didn't receive an excellent rating from us was that the map wasn't particularly clear and the tram waiting lines were long. Other than that, we truly enjoyed the experience.

We walked ourselves silly and enjoyed every minute. The place is scenic and the exhibits and layout exceptional. The RIO 4D show was a highlight and baby gorillas were a treat. Motor chairs and a trolley bus made it possible for all of us to stay together and get around. Highly recommend a visit.

I’ve been to several zoos in different states and have to say this is a really nice and expansive zoo with lots of exhibits. We had to decide which region to see African or North American – ended up parking in the African region of the zoo and easily spent 4 fun hours walking around attempting to follow the visitor guide. My kids seemed most interested in the zebras, chimpanzees, and elephants; the lemurs were entertaining for me –they jumped around a lot. The Asheboro Zoo was a good inexpensive trip for us; took two hours to get there and did a lot of walking due to the expansive size of the zoo but well worth the effort so, make sure you wear a comfortable pair of shoes. There is a Safari gift shop with the typical souvenirs you’d expect for a zoo and hiking trails which we elected not to do because of all the walking we had already done through the different animal areas and exhibits. There is a shuttle available at the zoo, the restrooms were clean and parking is free.

Visited the zoo on 2 separate days, the first day we spent in the Africa section and the second in North America. The zoo is over 500 acres and provide abundant area for the animals and many walking trails for the guest. A must visit if you are in the area. We will be bring our grand children this fall.
