We stayed in Winston-Salem so the NC Zoo was at least an hour's drive away, and we were very glad we made the trip to see this wonderful place. Billed as the world's largest natural habitat zoo, the animals, especially the elephants, giraffes and various antelopes had very large spaces to roam in. The rhinos appeared to be close to a mile away from where we saw them, and the zoo has only a few of each species so they are not at all crowded. Puffins and otters are always a treat to watch, and this was no exception.
The zoo is set up on a straight line with parking and entrances at each end, and there is free tram or shuttle service between each end. Even though we visited on the Fourth of July, there was no wait at all for the bus service. Very well designed zoo with plenty of drinking fountains, restrooms, and benches scattered all along the route, and we easily spent the entire day there. Beautiful layout with lots of attractive and interesting planting, and lots of sculpture along the route as well, some large enough for kids to climb on. The employees and volunteers we met were all very helpful and informative -- all together it made for a great day.
