The Villas at Koru Village
Reviewed 10 October 2011

I spent the most glorious week at the Koru Spa and Villas. Tried a couple of yoga classes and found it to be a relaxing experience. Then I had a facial and a massage at the spa. Heavenly!!! I stayed in Villa Fire and thought it was well decorated and very spacious. Being able to walk across the street and enjoy the sunrise over the ocean was spectacular. The only downside was leaving. I felt so relaxed there. The staff was gracious, friendly and accomodating. Can't wait to go back.

We stayed in a really nice room called "EARTH"! Very clean, we felt like coming home .... only fridge was empty!! Hi hi! We can highly recommend to anyone! Beach access right across the street and great restaurants nearby! (Mack Daddy's / Cafe 12). Enjoyed classes with Hatha Yoga. Even Yoga close to the beach out in the sunshine (early morning) was so special!!! Owners and staff very friendly!

Room Tip: check the internet! Each room is different! Choose the colours you like best!

Our family of 6 stayed in Villa Fire the beginning of July. We loved it! The villa was decorated in modern decor and supplied all the kitchen items we needed. It was great having a washer and dryer too.

Staying at Spa Koru was like having the convienience of a nice hotel but the room and feel of a small beach cottage. There were outside grills and tables, a fire pit, a covered gazebo, vollyball, bicycles for the guest to use and access to the spa for a workout or yoga. The beach was a 2-3 minute walk with kids and it was so nice to be able to go to the pool when they were done with sand. This was so much more than we were expecting. Thanks for a wonderful vacation!

A group of five of us traveled down to Spa Koru for a yoga retreat in June. We were really excited about the trip and looking forward to all the amenities of the "resort". However, when we checked in Friday afternoon, we were not met with any typical spa or resort treatment (maybe a spritzer with cucumber, a fruit try, etc) - instead, we were promptly handed a sheet of paper instructing that we MUST check out before 10am on Sunday. Funny, the website lists check-out at 11am & check-in at 4pm - no exceptions....I'll get back to that later.
To add to the "warm welcome", they overcharged our fifth (non-yoga) member by $10 and said that was just the way it is for us to get the rate we got - which, by the way, was higher than initially proposed by the former director. We later got the $10 refunded after complaining to the owner. We were also informed at check in that the yoga instructor was running late, so our first workshop would not start until 6:30pm. More on the disappointing yoga later. So, we checked into our "villa" (ha!) - a glorified no-frills apartment, without enough towels for everyone. Why did they ask us for all our information on everyone if they weren't going to prepare the room properly for us to begin with?? We finally got towels for everyone... but it's a good thing we all hung them up because we never saw maid service at all over the weekend. For that reason, we ignored the brazen envelope on the fridge, signed "Thank you - Lucy". Perhaps if we'd seen some evidence of Lucy, we would have left her a tip...
So now to the yoga. We paid $160 each for the yoga workshop, which was to consist of four classes, each 2-1/2 hours long. The first class did not start until 6:40pm and did not go over to account for the instructor's lateness. During the second class, which was at 8am by the pool (which is not on site, by the way), the instructor decided for us that it was too hot , so she finished the class after about 60 mins, and moved us down to the beach for a "meditation". What a joke that was! It consisted of sitting on the beach for 30 minutes, not being led in any way through said "meditation". After the third class (which actually started and ended on time), we (thought we) were in for a treat - a vegetarian buffet for dinner! But we were duped again. We were expecting some delightful spa cuisine offerings, but this disappoining "buffet" consisted of a bowl of spring mix salad, a tomato and cucumber salad and a bowl of rotini pasta with sauce and a few veggies. Not even close to what any of us had envisioned. What's worse is that they wanted to charge $25 for this "extravagant spread" to anyone who wasn't taking the yoga workshop. HA!
The last class was on Sunday morning. One of the girls in our group had notified the instructor well ahead of time that she had a wrist injury. The instructor said she would be able to modify. But while she taught handstands, there were no modifications offered to our friend, or to any of the class newbies, for that matter - they were all simply told to "sit and watch". (So much for deepening our yoga practice.) Now, as it happens, this class was the one she chose to go over by almost 40 minutes. As we were told to get out by 10am, this left our fifth (non-yogi) member sitting outside in the "meditation garden" in the 90+ degree heat... watching as new guests checked into our former room at 12:30 that afternoon. What happened to their 4pm check in - no exceptions - rule?
We will not be back.

First off, we are very sorry that this guest did not enjoy their stay with us. In response to this review, we are not a "resort", and do not advertise ourselves as one. As far as their experience with the Villa check-in and check-out times, we have greatly improved our procedures regarding that. As for their other concerns, we have accepted her feedback and are continually working on ways to improve a guest's experience here at Koru Village.

Winter lasted way to long in PA. We needed a place to escape, and also hook up with our son who was up from Mexico teaching some workshops in eastern NC. The apartment/villa at Koru was perfect for our purpose. So glad we discovered it. It had everything we needed/wanted. Was clean and quiet. Though we couldn't "see" the ocean from our room, it is a just a 5 minute walk across the road... very nice typical outer banks beach. And even in the first week of April there were seafood markets, shops and restaurants open enough to keep us happy. I kept the information... I'm sure we'll use Koru again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard if available.

We recently spent a few days exploring some of the banks area of NC. The units are clean, up-to-date, comfortable, & with many conveniences. Our two bedroom had 2 televisions w/cable t.v., wifi, a full (very clean) kitchen with everything that you could need (we'd been traveling for a few weeks & eating out alot & thus did take advantage of the kitchen to prep some meals) & in-unit laundry facilities. Additionally, guests have use of their state-of-the-art gym.

Everything was clean & fresh & recently renovated.

The owners are friendly & helpful & we enjoyed our stay & could highly recommend the Villas at Spa Koru!
