“Love it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2013

We booked a room for my parent at the Gilded Swan and could not have been more pleased. Elaine Swanson, the proprietor, was a most gracious and accommodating hostess. The house is beautifully decorated and the breakfasts were delicious. Elaine even sat down with us at breakfast and shared her knowledge of Ashtabula. By the time my parents checked out, we felt like old friends. What a wonderful experience!

The rooms are nice, the place is clean, the breakfast is excellent, the rest of the house is nicely decorated. It is within easy walking distance of several fast food restaurants, a couple of sit down restaurants and a drug store. The innkeeper is pleasant and informed about the area and can steer you to most of what you may want or need. It is not within an easy walk of the beach.

Only the king suite is on the ground floor. It has a bedroom, a tiny sitting room with the side entrance door and a door to the dining room, an ensuite with a jacuzzi tub, a dressing alcove and closet. The television is tiny, so figure on using your computer for viewing entertainment. They have free and very reliable wifi. I had no trouble streaming anything. They provide access to shampoo and have little soap bars and a hair dryer, but not the lotion and so forth that I have become accustomed to in hotels.

There are another three rooms on the upper floor, one with an ensuite, and the other two with their own half baths, and sharing a full bath. I had use of the kitchen during the day, though all I used was the microwave to make tea.

There are winerys (I am not sure I spelled that correctly - wineries?) in the area and covered bridges, though many are said to be remote and on dirt roads, some are accessible to those of us who are less committed to finding them. The lake is a very easy drive away, as are those winerys.

They are very accommodating here and will likely meet most reasonable requests.

Once you step your first foot into Gilded Swan you will forget about the location. Elaine is wonderful, she is always available day or night. Whether your a local or from out of town she is always avaliable if you should need directions.Breakfast is wonderful!!! The entire house is beautiful, every room is different with hand painting. The house is very clean and very quiet. For the price I will definetly be returning. I recommend Gilded Swan to anyone visting the Astubula area.

We stayed one night at the Gilded Swan and loved it. The breakfast was wonderful and the room was clean and large. It was not too expensive. We found it very relaxing and beautiful. It is within walking distance of a good mexican restaurant and close the some main roads.

Staying at the Gilded Swan was a pleasure. Tony was an excellant host (he is also the elected City Manager) a great conversationalist and a pretty good cook. The room was comfortable and pleasant. The home was quiet, peaceful and close to the lake. If your looking for the Ritz, don't go to Ashtabula. If you want a friendly, relaxing and beautiful home to stay in, The Guilded Swan is the perfect place for you.

We spent 2 days at the Gilded Swan and it was totally amazing. The bed and breakfast is beautiful inside and in the Captain's Quarters is where we stayed there in the bathroom were hand painted pictures on the wall. Someone took alot of time and energy to do them and it was worth it. Elaine our host was there promptly to meet us, showed us around and gave us some really good suggestions for food and wineries. She made the most amazing breakfasts in the morning they were to die for. Thanks again for everything we will definitely be back.

We were happy with the Bed and Breakfast. We stayed in the Vintage Suite, which was the most expensive and it was very nice. I was disappointment though because I booked the sunset sailboat cruise for Saturday night and wasn't told until I asked at 6:30 on Saturday that we were not going to be able to go because the sailboat was broken. Taking the sunset cruise was the main reason I chose this particular B&B, so I was somewhat dissatisfied with that.

We stayed 2 nights and breakfast both mornings was very good. We had eggs and bacon the first morning and some really really good french toast and sausage the second morning. It was definetly worth the price we paid for the room and the breakfast.

The thing that wasn't nice was the town of Ashtabula. The "shopping" district (Bridge St.) consisted of about 5 or 6 shops and quite a few empty buildings. We never really found anyplace nice in the city. The other interesting thing was that the mayor of Ashtabula was one of the innkeepers and talked about how great the Bridge St. area was and how nice this and that were the first morning we were there and the second day was more upfront and talked about how much needed to be improved. He also talked about a website he created www.trashtabula.com where he went around a took pictures of all the trash and run down houses and things of that nature that he used when he was running for office. I don't think the city looks as bad as it did in the pictures he took it is still run down and in need of major improvements.

I don't think we will go there again, not because of the Bed and Breakfast but because of the town and area.
