Owner description: Our permanent home is now under construction, but you can still watch our carvers and painters at work in our temporary studio, and enjoy browsing our gift shop. We should be in our new home in June, 2017. Founded in 2004, the Historic Carousel and Museum is creating a world class carousel complex in downtown Albany that will draw visitors from around the world and contribute to the economic revitalization of historic downtown Albany.

“Spectacular craftsmanship!”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

Such beautiful art! The animal carvings are incredibly intricate, the designs are detailed and clever, and the painting is beautiful! Very interesting to see the creation in all stages of progress in the studio/workrooms. And fun for kids to see/climb on the critters. Definitely worth a visit!

“what a wonderful place to visit Seeing a true art form preserved”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

I was truly amazed and inspired after visiting this museum. The tour guide was so informed and had such joy at sharing this wonderful project with us its was great. This town is trying to restore a beautiful old carousel and have found artist to help build this carousel again using the same style and craftmenship as they did long time ago. Just beautiful works of art. It was a real treat to talk to the men who were currently working on their animal and be able to answer questions was wonderful. It was a place to not miss if anywhwere around this area stop there.the stories behind each animal was very interesting and well worth your time to explore.

“Something Magical at the Historic Carousel Museum”
Reviewed 25 August 2013

Everyone loves a Carousel....remember your mom lifting you onto a colorful horse or other animal then letting you go, all alone, round and round, up and down, while the music was blaring. You hoped the ride would never end!

We didn't know what the Historic Carousel Museum in Albany, Oregon was before going there earlier this month. Their brochure says, "Painted ponies, a proud lion and a rampaging boar. These whimsical animals and other items displaying colorful craftsmanship and history can be seen at the Dentzel American Carousel Museum in down town Albany, OR. The museum houses the world's largest public collection of historic Dentzel carousel pieces." Besides these historic carousel pieces you can go into the carving shop where towns people are carving a new carousel. Watch as animals go from sketches on paper, through the hand-carving and painting processes, to the finished product in the art studio. Thousands of volunteer hours and donations will help complete the menagerie of more than 52 animals needed for the carousel's opening ride. The museum is open 10AM to 4PM Monday - Saturday at 503 1st Avenue W...you can look up their website at www.albanycarousel.com. A great place to take yourself and your children to see how a carousel is coming to life one animal at a time...these are really beautiful works of art!

“Great Place to see in Albany, OR”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

To see local artisans at work on a community project, this is a must see! It is free to walk around and see this work in progress. The various stages of carving can be observed, and it makes you appreciate what goes on "behind the scenes" to make a carousel from start to finish.

You can see the history of the carousel--from it's vision to present day. The carvers are truly artists and their work from drawings, to carving, to painting is amazing.

This is a labor of love, and you can see how much this project is appreciated by the local community. Take the time to visit, you will be glad you did!
