Owner description: Our permanent home is now under construction, but you can still watch our carvers and painters at work in our temporary studio, and enjoy browsing our gift shop. We should be in our new home in June, 2017. Founded in 2004, the Historic Carousel and Museum is creating a world class carousel complex in downtown Albany that will draw visitors from around the world and contribute to the economic revitalization of historic downtown Albany.

they let you watch them at they work on the carousel. These ppl put such hard work and so many hours into this just for ppl to maybe someday ride on this carousel. I cant wait till it is done so i can take the grandkids and start a family tradition.

The Carousel workshop is a gem - one of the highlights from our trip to Oregon - it is so rare to see a community come together like this. Volunteers have logged over 150,000 hours since 2005 to build a wooden carousel with all sorts of animals (horses, bison, beaver, a bear, a salmon, fish, etc.). At the workshop, visitors can see animals being carved out of wood by hand (no power tools or metal pieces are being used) and painted. Completed animals are on display and sketches of animals in progress are also on display. The volunteers that were there when we visited are happy to share with us what they are working on and the history and backstories on the project. The donors who sponsored the animals were able to provide input on the details to be included so each animal has lots of personality. The goal is for the carousel to be ready for use in 5 years. The mechanisim for the carousel has a few animals on it and tours are provided to see that at certain times.
We ended up spending an hour at the workshop seeing imagination and artistry at work and also talking with the volunteers who are so nice. There is a sign in the workshop, "Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to produce uncommon results." Visitors can feel that when visiting the workshop - it is magical.
We are planning a return visit once the carousel opens up - my husband is eager to ride Geno, the orca. I am partial to Lady Sophia, the poodle.

I enjoyed seeing the work in process of restoring the carousal and how long it takes to complete one horse at a time.

This is an amazing place to visit. The art of making the various figures for the carousel is worth seeing. This is one place that if you are anywhere even close by you have to go see.
