Owner description: Our permanent home is now under construction, but you can still watch our carvers and painters at work in our temporary studio, and enjoy browsing our gift shop. We should be in our new home in June, 2017. Founded in 2004, the Historic Carousel and Museum is creating a world class carousel complex in downtown Albany that will draw visitors from around the world and contribute to the economic revitalization of historic downtown Albany.

“A must see!”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

The community of Albany Oregon has joined forces to make from scratch, a carousel. All the animals 52 in all, are being carved, painted and loved by community volunteers. There is a small museum as well. You are welcome to watch and talk to the carvers and painters. They are very happy to explain what is happening and what the future will hold. They are fundraising for the multipurpose building which will house the carousel. If you are in the area and want to check out a fabulous attraction for all ages go look in on the carousel! All are welcome. All ages will enjoy.

“Surprising Treasure”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

If you happen to be a wandering in downtown Albany don't dare miss this wonderful FREE museum. It is truly a work in progress. They are hand carving carousel animals as they did in bygone times. This is all accomplished by volunteers. As you move about the museum workers are more than happy to any questions you may have. Some years down the road the plan is to place the wooden animals on their carousel and have it operational. What a gem for the city that will be. Worth your visit!

“great place to visit”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

This place was so much fun and so interesting. Had a great tour and was able to talk to the carvers. Each piece has a story and when all are complete, will be housed in a huge building.

“Beauty Taking Shape”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

We have been going to see the wood carvers working on animals for the carousel for ten years. All are volunteeers, and they are doing beautiful work. There is a room that contains the mechanism for the ride, and also a gift shop that contains some antique pieces, but the best are the big carvings that have been "suggested" by the donors. Most are already painted, and some have been lent out to different businesses and can be seen around town. We always take visitors to see the carousel, and they love it, too. Docents and workers are glad to talk about the carousel, too, as you walk through the giant workshop.

“A gem in the making in downtown Albany”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

This all-volunteer organization is hand-carving carousel animals and restoring an antique carousel mechanism, with the final product scheduled to be housed in a purpose-built building on the current site. The carvers are eager to tell the stories about "their" animal, and encourage questions. The painting is fascinating to watch, and the finished animals are truly works of art. If possible, you should visit often to see the progress! A top attraction for the area, and for kids young and old alike.
