Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Owner description: You don't need to head to England to experience the genius of a Shakespearean play. Much closer to home is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival located in Ashland, Oregon. Every year at the end of October you can enjoy on average over ten of Shakespeare's plays performed in both classic and newly imagined style. Separate tickets are needed for each show which is held at one of the event campus's two indoor or one outdoor spaces.

The reason OSF works is that you can see live theater at a time that is allowed by your schedule. We can't plan our vacations around theatrical production. Our vacations are determined by pauses between products. That's the foundation of why OSF works. Most of the time the theater is very good. Every now and then it is spectacular. We saw Dan Donohue do a phenomenal performance as Richard the 3rd last night and a production of Comedy of Errors that had me in hysterics for almost all of the play. Either performance was more than worth the time, money and effort to get here. If you haven't been, you just don't know what you are missing!

Richard III and The Tempest were particularly good, all the others were good enough to attend again.

This was our 1st visit to the OSF. Wonderful theaters, all close together, great seating throughout each one. I highly recommend the Backstage Tour to get a behind the scenes look at how it all comes together. I was glad we had seen a play before taking the tour as it gave me that much more appreciation and understanding. The actors are all fabulous. Definitely a must see for anyone!

The acting is always first rate. We always try one non-Shakespeare play we have never seen and have sometimes seen stunning surprises. We have also seen the best Death of a Salesman ever, a Streetcar that was a revelation and the Hamlet we saw here was superb.
Occasionally, one falls short, but it is always worth the trip.

Not just Shakespeare, but a wide range of theatre including contemporary dramas, musicals, comedies, and ground-breaking premiers performed in three different venues: a black box, a traditional proscenium setting, and a true Shakespearean, open air theatre. Almost always great performances, some risky interpretations, some stunningly good new theatre, and some fantastic Shakespeare. We travel to Ashland twice a year in order to catch all eleven plays and we keep coming back!
