“A great hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2011

My wife and I have been staying at the Columbia since the fall of 1997. Since then we've only stayed there unless it was booked. The other places we've stayed at don't really compare in terms of all the variables: cost, comfort, convenience, cleanliness, attractiveness.

Since discovering the Columbia Hotel in 2006, my wife and I have stayed there every time we visit Ashland to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which is at least once a year and sometimes more often. Over the years, that has amounted to at least 10 stays at the Columbia. Frankly, I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Ashland. Yes, the Columbia isn't cheap by Motel 6 standards, but it is very comfortable and incredibly convenient to the theaters and downtown restaurants. Moreover, I would challenge anybody to find a comparable accommodation in Ashland that is more economically priced. The fact is, everything in Ashland is expensive. The Columbia is one of the least expensive places to stay there.
In answer to the critics among the reviewers of this hotel, this is in fact a very "European" style hotel, absolutely reminiscent of similar hotels in which I stayed in European cities in the 1970's. Except for four rooms with ensuite bath or shower, all rooms have shared bathroom facilities. Nevertheless, the bathrooms are scattered around the hotel and are very convenient. I've never had a problem during the many times I've stayed there. The furnishings and the bedrooms are modest, but comfortable. Indeed, the rooms are far more comfortable and commodious than those in more modernized (and far more expensive) hotels in which I've recently stayed in Europe. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
In sum, the only reason I don't give the Columbia 5 stars is because of the shared bathroom situation, which as I've indicated, isn't really a problem in view of the convenience and comfortableness of the hotel itself.

If you're used to boutique hotels with all the meaningless frou frou, stay there. If you want chain "luxury" stay on one of those joints. If you want good honest friendly accommodations the Columbia is what you will like. Very nice people, running commentary on the plays at the front desk, rooms can be a little small, all clean and tidy, nice communal atmosphere, center of town, walk to all the Ashland events. We've stayed there twice and would not think of staying anywhere else. After a stay at the Columbia everything else seems so sterile and portioned.

Room Tip: Make sure you are comfortable with communal bath arrangements. Ask about seating/workspace in rooms...

We arrange our visits to Ashland on the availability of rooms at the Columbia Hotel. That is how special this hotel is. It is clean, downtown, beautifully decorated, always welcoming, fresh flowers, relaxing and is a good example of why some hotels are the ones you want to return to and some you don't.

The Columbia Hotel is one of those hotels where I love to stay and want to return to - over and over again - and I am always grateful that a hotel like the Columbia exists!

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautifully decorated - some with private baths - and welcoming.

My book group friends and I just returned from our 4th play-going trip to Ashland. Every visit, we stay at the Columbia Hotel and love it there. For very reasonable rates, rooms are clean and comfy and the staff is terrific. The living room area includes coffee in the morning, New York Times, and a casual home-like feel. Chatting with other guests is fun because they are generally like-minded and have interesting stories to share. If you only like Marriott- type hotels, then the Columbia is probably not for you. If you enjoy a European style hotel - not too fancy but family-like - in a convenient location, then try the Columbia.

Room Tip: Innkeepers Room has a small kitchen - stove, frig, sink, etc.

We spent the weekend at the Columbia Hotel to take in a play at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. The entrance to the hotel leads up a beautiful staircase to the second floor lobby and rooms. It is an historic boutiques hotel with a large lobby with two sitting areas, quiet, WiFi friendly (free), coffee, newspaper... It is comfortable and used by visitors throughout the day. The rooms are beautiful as well, with sinks in the room and shared bathroom/shower facilities down the hall. (Clean and well maintained). We had a "Spacious Queen" which was indeed spacious, also quiet, despite being a mere block from the Festival, right downtown on Main Street. The staff was friendly and accommodating, especially Holly, who timed her leaving so we could grab her parking spot, and Julie, who called several restaurants at 5:45 to find us a 6:00 dinner spot. Parking is the only problem since they have but 8 spots, but everything is so close we didn't mind finagling a bit.

Room Tip: There is one room with bathroom included. Rooms smaller than a "Spacious Queen" are better...

We have been staying at the Columbia Hotel for years and it just keeps getting better. They have made many upgrades to the decor, but it is still old fashioned and homey. It is so convenient that we just park the car and walk to the plays, restaurants, shopping and more. Beds are comfortable, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly, the rooms are clean and yet it is the best deal in town! We often use the rooms with the bathroom "down the hall" which I like, but many of the rooms have bathrooms, so there are choices. We look forward to staying here every year.

Room Tip: Rooms on the East side are cooler. (but, weather is usually not a problem in September)
